60's MUSCLE CAR IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!
If you had the means to build your dream car, what would it be? For more than a few people, it's a big block powered 1969 Chevelle SS, and the fellow who built this car went all-out, taking a clean Mailbu and giving it a laser-straight charcoal gray body, then stuffing it with 540 cubic inches and a gorgeous charcoal black leather interior. Matching numbers cars this nice cost tens of thousands more, so this is a car that will knock people out at shows and can be driven instead of sealed away forever. Honestly, isn't it about time you had a big block Chevelle you can enjoy? Deep and lustrous, the paint on this car is simply stunning, and it's sitting on top of an original born & bred North Carolina rust-free body. It's no secret that a lot of these cars led hard lives, and even when they were new, they were typically not as carefully assembled as a restored piece. But sometimes a guy falls in love and goes the extra mile, as was surely the case here. He spent hours and hours block sanding each panel to get rid of any ripples and waves, and probably wet sanded the paint between each coat to get it as flat and smooth as it is now. The final clear coat probably barely had enough time to fully cure, and then it, too, was sanded and buffed until any trace of orange peel was exorcised from the surface. He also took great pains to replicate factory finishes, so it looks very authentic. Correct white stripes were applied down the flanks, and you can see how well aligned the car is when you follow the line. This is one of those cars where you'll be tempted to run your fingers along the paint because it's so deep and smooth, you may almost believe it's still wet. The chrome and trim is equally nice. The bumpers are new, front and rear, and all the stainless has either been restored and polished or replaced with quality reproduction pieces. A correct SS grille up front completes the illusion. The glass is excellent, including the windshield that looks way too nice to be original, but probably is. When you’re building your dream car, you’re pretty much free to go crazy, especially if you’re not starting with some kind of super-rare piece. Chevelles, even SS models, are popular cars, so there’s just no reason not to build it the way you want. And the guy who did this one was not only a horsepower junkie, but a stickler for details, too. The SS 396 badges on the flanks don't even begin to tell the whole story. This is where the crazy part I was talking about comes in. Not one to spare expense, the owner got in touch with famed horse power gurus at World Products (now Bill Mitchell Products) and struck a rather expensive "10 stack" deal to have a 540 built to his liking. Did I mention Billy's motto? "We Will Never Sacrifice Quality For Cost. It definitely applies here. And as I looked at the Dyno number (632), another one of Mitchell's motto's came to mind...
"We Sell Horsepower" Another expensive deviation from stock is a set of long-tube Hooker headers that allow this potent big block to breathe properly and give it a vicious sound at full throttle. Speaking of full throttle, how 'bout an 1100 Dominator carb tuned to perfection. (Somehow screams perfectly using only 93 pump gas). Did I forget to tell you about the CSR aluminum radiator? Yea, it's there, along with the tranny cooler and twin electric fans. Not to be outdone, a ton of money went into a Select Brand Turbo 400 Reverse Valve Body 3 Speed Transmission. What good are all those ponies without something to back 'em up? Speaking of backin' 'em up, how about a brand new Eaton 10 bolt 3.73 posi-traction rear end that handles the 580 foot pounds of torque. Take any doubts away? I could go on and on about just how nice the build is on this car... so I will. The chassis is equally nice and just as well detailed. A satin black frame and new floors are the canvas, and the various parts and components are the artwork. Did I mention that this is a rotisserie restoration? The owner didn't trust just any jig so he built his own. That's a true craftsman. A quick trip inside reveals a Flaming River Tilt Steering column, custom dash, new custom seats (front and back), new headliner, yada, yada, yada. You can tell I'm getting tired so let me wrap this up by pointing out that a car this fast screams for front disc brakes. Sorry you're on your own there. While brand new, you only have the original drum brakes to try and stop this beast. (Good luck with that.) Also, albeit a Flaming River Steering set up with all new suspension, manual steering is the way it came and manual steering is the way it's going leave. The new owner can expect to spend a few bucks taking that ugly scratch out of the hood and maybe a few more bucks to make a hardly noticeable dimple on the fender go away. Other than that, bring the weakest magnet you can find. With the exception of a very small area on the right rear quarter, she'll hold on just fine. Chevelles don’t get much nicer than this, and this one is priced right considering the amount of time and effort that went into its construction. Restored by someone who obviously suffers from a severe case of obsessive compulsive disorder, this is a car that will knock people dead and will require a real expert to determine that it is a well-built tribute. It’s also scary fast and a lot of fun to drive, as well was beautiful. If you’re the kind of guy who prefers a car he can drive to one that has to be protected as an investment, this may be your Chevelle. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better one, and the fact that it’s a well-executed tribute means you can drive it all you want without endangering a rare machine.
