They say, most of the masterpieces of the Renaissance were produced in Europe, specifically in Italy. Well maybe. I won’t argue the point. But, this masterpiece was definitely a cooperative effort and a product of Italy. In fact in San Giorgio Canavese,Italy where a company called Pininfarina designed and assembled the body for the new Cadillac Allante for General Motors in Detroit Michigan from 1987 to 1993.
Originally designed to compete with theMercedes-Benz SLandJaguar XJS, the Allanté featured a slightly modified variant of the 4.1literV8used across Cadillac's model line at the time. Starting MSRP was $57,170 for the Convertible. It was a luxury sports car with front wheel drive vehicle that ran on regular gasoline and offered 18 MPG average. Great concept!
The Allanté is noted for an unusual production arrangement, where completed bodies designed and manufactured in Italy byPininfarina. Theywere shipped over 4,600miles fromItalyin specially equippedBoeing 747s, 56 at a time,to Cadillac'sDetroit / Hamtramck Assemblyplant where they were mated with domestically manufactured chassis and engine assemblies. Bodies had to be flown from theTurin International Airportin Italy to Detroit'sColeman A.Young International Airport, about 3 miles northeast of the new Hamtramck factory, known as the "Allante Air Bridge". The expensive shipping process was implemented because GM had recently closed theFisher Body Plant #18which traditionally supplied Cadillac bodies since 1921.So you could see how this was a pretty big deal back in the day when the Cadillac Allante was first introduced in 1987. That said, here is a little more useful information that demonstrates how exclusive these vehicles really were back in the day.
Only 21,000 vehicles were built over a seven-year production run.
And, in 1992 there were only 1931 units produced, the lowest production of any year that the Allante was available. A real prelude to the final year of production of 1993 when it shipped out a record 4670 units. There was no model available for 1994.
Allante was a full convertible, with integral folding soft top. Aluminum was used for the hood and trunk lid while the unit body/frame structure employed galvanized steel. The Allante’s wheelbase measured 8.4 inches shorter than another popular Cadillac, the Eldorado. The new 2-seater shared the fully independent suspension with the same Eldorado, and all-disc power brake system with Bosch anti-locking was standard.
Prices in the early 1990’s now included the mandated federal gas guzzler tax, which was now at $1,300 when purchased ( Ouch! ). Also, available on the convertible at extra-cost, was a pearl coat white paint group (option YL3) priced at $700 (found on only 443 models for 1992). And, to make 1992 an even more special year for innovated equipment, that this was the last year of the adjustableRecaroseating design. All in all, this specific vehicle was a special order, only 1 of 187 for that year. Why? Only 187 cars were equipped with the standard analog cluster this year. Most vehicles produced were equipped with an all digital dash at an extra cost of $492. All the rage in 1992!
Allante’s V8 engine delivered brisk acceleration too. The Allante was powered by a 4.5 Liter engine producing 200 Horsepower and 290ft.lbs of torque. Hoping for better performance and economy, this was the first year that platinum tipped spark plugs were used. Well, it worked! Cadillac claimed it reached 60 mph in just about 6 seconds. And, to compliment this power plant was a 4 speed automatic transmission with overdrive which produces smooth power to the ground.
Performance, handling, elegant Italian styling, and an abundant load of standard features were the main attributes of Cadillac’s 2-seater. One new feature introduced on this model was an electronically controlled shock absorber system that offered improved ride quality over the previous years model. A new second-generation speed-dependent damping system was supposed to provide shorter reaction times to adjust suspension firmness, based on vehicle speed. So, ride comfort did improve in 1992, with the refinements to the system which always seemed to be in just the correct mode while driving over several different road conditions.
Luxury features included Power Driver Seats with Memory and Lumbar Support, Reclining Passenger Seat, Leather upholstery, Power Door Locks, Power Windows, Power Steering, ABS brakes, Alloy wheels, Cruise Control, Air Conditioning with Auto Temperature Control, Illuminated Visor Mirrors, Full floor Console, Carpeted Floor Mats. Rear window defroster, Front Reading Lamps and Auto-On Headlights and Fog lights. The standard Delco-Bose Gold Series sound system earned an upgrade to 200-watt output with Premium speakers this year. The standard sound system now included both a cassette and a CD player. Power Antenna was standard. And, this one still works great!
