1959 CADILLAC TWO-DOOR HARDTOP COUPE
1959 Cadillac SERIES 6200
1959 CADILLAC TWO-DOOR HARDTOP COUPE
Named for the seventeenth century, French explorer who founded Detroit, the Cadillac Automobile Company was founded in 1902. It is the second oldest American automobile manufacturer in business today, after Buick. Interestingly enough, it was created from the remnants of Henry Ford's first eponymous company, after Ford himself quit, following a dispute with his backers. Cadillac quickly gained a reputation for quality and were soon acquired by General Motors (in 1909) to become GM's flagship brand. Always pioneers of technology, amongst many other innovations, Cadillac were the first company to install electric starters on their cars. This move was prompted by an unfortunate accident, that occurred in 1910. Byron Carter, a Cadillac owner and close friend of Cadillac's chief Henry Leland, stopped to help another Cadillac driving motorist, who's car had stalled on a bridge. Whilst attempting to start it, using the hand crank, the car backfired and the crank flew out and hit him on the head. He subsequently died from his injuries. Upon learning of his friend's misfortune, Leland declared that such a fate should never befall anyone that drives a Cadillac and so assisted in the development of the first production electric starter, which he began installing in 1912.
After the Second World War, under legendary chief stylist, Harley Earl, Cadillac produced some of the most outrageous yet luxurious and technologically advanced cars that the world had ever seen. In 1957, they launched an all-new model with significantly, an all new 'X'-frame chassis. This offered greater rigidity whilst allowing the cars to have a lower ride height. Each year, the new models further reflected the period obsession with futuristic styling and the jet age. And each year, the looks became more outrageous and the fins grew higher. This craze reached its zenith in 1959 with the introduction of possibly the most recognizable car in American (if not the World's) history, the 1959 Cadillac Coupe. Almost nineteen feet long and a whisker under 5,000 pounds, they were outrageously over the top, both literally and figuratively. The Series 6200 example offered here is in amazingly good, original condition throughout and runs and drives very well. According to the former owner, who bought it from the original owner, the car has just 83,000 miles from new, which is entirely commensurate with the overall condition of the car. Finished in the wonderfully named shade of 'Vegas Turquoise', the incredibly straight and rust-free body, still wears its original coat of paint predominantly and displays excellent shut lines. Likewise, the matching, black and turquoise interior is almost wholly original and equally superb. Aesthetically, they are the non plus ultra of automobiles but solid, original examples that run well are increasingly hard to find. So, while just to have as an objet d'art and gaze upon it, it is fabulous, the fact that you and your (many) friends, can hop in this one and drive it to your favourite diner, makes it beyond compare!
