For 1956, Buick had a new flagship model, the Roadmaster Riviera. Just under 25,000 copies were made in 1956 and at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, we have one that absolutely looks stunning with its black exterior and red interior! This example was made in General Motors’ Kansas City, Kansas assembly plant (VIN code 4). It was sold new at Fuhrman Buick in Morris, Minnesota on February 10, 1956. It left the assembly line with six-way power front seat (code S). Finished in Dover White (code C) over Carlsbad Black (code A), the paint and trim are in overall very good order and look great when paired with Harley Earl’s mid-50s body lines, including the Sweepspear and four Ventiports per side. The bodywork is solid and straight, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the battery appears new. Up front is that beautiful Dagmar chrome bumper with a wraparound twin-blade bumper in the rear. This classic Roadmaster rolls on mixed wide whitewall radials, size L78-15 and P235/75R15 and each tire rides on new wire wheels. The wheels are in excellent order while the tires are in very good shape with good tread. Under the hood is Buick’s well-known Nailhead 322 CID V-8 engine. Backing this motor is a Twin-Turbine two-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission. Please note that this Buick does have the usual Nailhead slow oil leak. Driver convenience features include power brakes, power steering, power windows and the aforementioned six-way power front seat. Inside is a black and red cloth-and-vinyl interior (code 734). The bench seats are in overall great condition and the red headliner is in excellent order. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and a red and black metal instrument panel shows off its jet-age style but the fuel gauge stops at 3/8ths of a tank but all other gauges are operable. A column-mounted shift lever and a factory AM radio, plus a metal tissue dispenser, round out the interior. In 1956, Roadmaster had a shallower Sweepspear that did not dip all the way to the rocker panel as on other models. Twin chrome strips graced the decklid with Roadmaster spelled out between them. Roadmaster script now appeared on the doors beneath the vent windows. Fender tip dual bombsights were standard. Two stator wheels were adopted as an improvement to Dynaflow. A brand new four-door Riviera hardtop, proved to be the most popular Roadmaster, with 24,770 units sold and outselling the pillared sedan by more than two-to-one. A padded dash became standard. Documentation includes the original owner’s manual; original identification card; original Buick owner service policy; Important Tips on your ’56 Buick; original 1956 Buick brochure; and more. Competition to this Buick in 1956 included Cadillac’s Sedan de Ville, Chrysler’s New Yorker Newport Hardtp[ sedan, DeSoto’s Firedome, Imperial’s Southampton, Lincoln’s Premiere, Mercedes-Benz’s 220 S, Mercury’s Custom Hardtop Sedan and Oldsmobile’s 98 Deluxe Holiday.
