1986 Buick Regal

1986 Buick Regal

The Buick Regal is an upscale mid-sized automobile that was first introduced by Buick for the 1973 model year. The model was originally positioned as a personal luxury car, and typically offered in both coupe and sedan forms until 1997, when the Regal became sedan-only due to the decline of the personal luxury coupe market. For certain model years between 1973 and 2004, the Regal shared bodies and powertrains with the similar Buick Century, although the Regal was positioned as a more upmarket vehicle.

For consignment a project car for the ambitious restorer. Many invasive rusted surfaces, cracked and crazed paint, and inconsistent gaps. Interior of blue crushed velour overstuffed seats, well worn, and mechanically for the test drive it had a heavy smell of gas.

Exterior
Bathed in a beige respray, areas of overspray, cracking, pitting and invasive rust are noted throughout. Some underlying bubbling is beginning around the roof drip rails and can be seen surrounding some of the trimmings (door handles/locks etc.). Side highlight trim is peeling off the underlying plastic, and there is a trim piece missing from the lower trunk deck. Brown vinyl landau style top is in good condition, although the trim rails are off center on some areas, as well as a broken badge on the driver's side. Where the roof meets the landau top there is a gap. American racing wheels and like new radials are seen on all 4 corners.

Interior
Blue crushed velour with large pillow attached cushions with buttons make up the seats inside. The dash and surfaces are dirty. Shag carpet shows wear. The headliner is dark blue and intact. Original dash is on and gauges are also original.

Drivetrain
The original engine has been replaced by a consigner stated Oldsmobile 307ci 5.0 liter. There is now a 4-barrel carburetor on top. The original automatic transmission is on back of this mill, and consigner states this car drives like a dream and actually drove it to the Mall from Chicago.

Undercarriage
Invasive rust is seen throughput, on the floorpans and rockers. More wear underneath, some surface rust on suspension and other parts, and thanks to the heavy oiling produced by what probably was the original engine the passenger side has been saved from the surface rust due to this heavy oiling phenomenon. Quite the happy accident and a real coincidental plus, most likely due to the original engine that resided there until the end of 2019.

Drivability
On our test track this Buick performed admirably and is a decent driving example.
