1965 Buick Electra 225

1965 Buick Electra 225

This 1965 Electra 225 is a well-maintained survivor with one older repaint in its original colors of Shell Beige and Sahara Mist. The car features its original interior in Beaucrest cloth and contrasting leather-grained vinyl.

The Buick was delivered new in Oregon - a wedding gift for the original owners. Purchased at a Portland-area Buick dealership, the car has remained in the Pacific Northwest throughout its entire history. It has never been exposed to road salt, and has always been garage-kept.The original owner family retained the car until April, 2014, when I purchased it as a collector car for occasional cruises and shows.

I have accepted a new job in another area of the USA, and my relocation necessitates the sale of this fine Buick.

Additional Photos

The Electra Model and Styling

The Electra 225 is one of the great automotive nameplates of the 1960's, and many believe that the 1965 represents the zenith of General Motors styling excellence. In their authoritative book on automotive design, "A Century of Automotive Style", Michael Lamm and Dave Holls note:"Bill Mitchell gave life to some of the handsomest automobiles General Motors ever built.Case in point:His entire 1965 line of full-sized cars. Each one of them still shows remarkable grace and beauty. . . His '65's stand out as the shining stars of his career. . . "In a later interview with Collectible Automobile magazine, Holls singles out the 1965 Buicks, commenting that they had "shape and style from every angle".

And this example is a complete, unmolested car in excellent operating condition. The Buick represents mid-1960's elegance and high-style, in keeping with the Electra 225's premium status.

Factory Options

Power windows, 6-way power seats, power antenna, Sonomatic AM radio, and remote control outside rearview mirror are all in working condition. The power antenna is not fully retracting. The power trunk release and speed alert are not working.

Powertrain and Mechanical Condition

The Buick is powered by its original "Wildcat 445" V8 engine of 401 cubic inch displacement. The stamped number on the block matches the VIN plate. The Buick 401 is legendary for its smooth, quiet operation and long engine life. The car performs well and is reliable for longer highway cruises. The engine does not smoke. The motor oil has been changed regularly, and oil level remains constant between changes.

The original Super Turbine 400 - Buick's variant of the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 (with variable-pitch stator) -- has been well maintained, and shifts smoothly.

Buick's massive finned aluminum brake drums were considered the best in the industry, and this car's braking system remains very original and in working order.

The heater / defroster, radio, instrument gauges, headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals, windshield wipers, interior lights, reverse lamps, parking brake, and horn all work, although the driver's side front turn signal / parking lamp bulb and one reverse lamp are burned out.Manual vent windows and floor vents are operational.

The tires are radials with good tread, but are older tires and may require replacement.

The exhaust pipe has a hole and requires repair.

Body, Frame, Floors, and Paint Condition

Given that the car is a Pacific Northwest survivor car, the body is in very solid condition.Careful inspection indicates that factory seams and welds are still present and that no panels have been replaced.

The susceptible areas in the lower front fenders and below the rear window show a very minor amount of rust bubbling, and the photos show the very limited extent. There is no rust perforation. The floor pans, trunk pan, rocker panels, and entire undercarriage appear to be very solid.

The glass is in excellent condition, and the windshield has been recently replaced.

Wheel covers, rear fender skirts, and all trim and stainless is on the car.

The rear bumper has dings and dents, and there is rust through on the bottom edges in line with the rear tires, where dirt or mud accumulated. The front bumper is straight and serviceable, and polishes up nicely.

As noted, the car has been repainted years ago, and remains very presentable with an original appearance.

Interior and Trunk Compartment Condition

The original seating surfaces remain beautiful, with one notable stain on the rear seat cloth. The door panels and bright work are in nearly perfect condition. The dash pad and instruments are excellent, as is the rear package shelf. The original carpeting remains in very good condition.

The car was equipped with the General Motors foam style headliner, and the headliner and sun visor covers require replacement.

The trunk compartment liners and cardboard are in very good original condition, and all tire jack tools are present.
