1987 Buick GNX!
1987 Buick GNX #523 (1 of 547)
with only 13 Miles!
Bobby Labonte Signature Series (1 of 1)

I'm the owner of "Classic Cars Online, llc." and this is my personal vehicle.
You will be purchasing this GNX directly from me. I acquired this outstanding vehicle a few months ago. It was sold new by Scott Garten Buick in High Point, North Carolina on 12/31/87 (New Years Eve) with 11 miles on the odometer. The purchased price was $5,210.00 OVER window sticker. The vehicle was only driven two(2) miles since then. Over the years it changed hands from collector to collector. One of those collectors took the vehicle to numerous shows were it received countless awards. It achieved a perfect 400/400 score in the T-R Concours Class at the GS Nationals. (Buick Grand Sport Club of America.)
Buick had a phrase or a slogan for the GNXs: "A HIGH-PERFORMANCE INVESTMENT FOR THE FORTUNATE 547".
These GNXs do not come up for sale very often. They are usually sold at high end auction events where you would pay an extra 10% commission on top of the hammer price.
Not here. NO extra fees! This is your opportunity to add a blue chip collector vehicle to your auto collection.
Don't miss your chance to become one of the fortunate.

What is a "GNX"? (1 of 547): #523 For 1987, one year only, Buick introduced the Limited Production GNX "Grand National Experimental" at $29,290. Produced by American Sunroof Corporation(ASC) and McLaren Specialty Products. Buick built 547 Grand Nationals with the interior trim Package. They were then sent off to ASC/McLaren to be upgraded into the Buick GNX. Buick underrated the GNX at 276 hp and a very substantial 360 lb·ft of torque (actual output is 300 hp and 420 lb·ft). This was created to be the "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals." Changes made included a special Garrett T-3 turbocharger with a ceramic-impeller blowing through a more efficient and significantly larger capacity intercooler with a "CERMATEL (Ceramic/Aluminum) coated" pipe connecting the intercooler to the engine. A GNX specific E-EPROM, low-restriction exhaust with dual mufflers, reprogrammed Turbo Hydramatic 200-4R transmission with a custom torque converter and transmission cooler, and unique differential cover/panhard bar included more of the performance modifications. The GNX suspension received an unique torque arm that was mounted to a special, GNX only, rear differential cover, for increased traction. The torque arm rear suspension alters the suspension geometry, making the body lift while planting the rear tires down, resulting in increased traction. Exterior styling changes include vents located on each front fender, four fender flares, 16 inch black mesh style wheels with VR-speed rated tires, and deletion of the hood and fender emblems. The interior changes of the GNX included a numbered plaque on the dash and a revised instrument cluster providing white faced analog Stewart-Warner gauges, including an analog turbo boost gauge.
Bobby Labonte Signature Series (1 of 1): Bobby Labonte is a NASCAR driver that won the Winston Cup Series Championship in 2000. Before then, in 1986, Bobby Labonte began driving in the “Late Model Stock” class. His sponsor was Scott Garten Buick, a dealership in High Point, NC. In 1987, Bobby won 12 races at Caraway Speedway, clinching the track championship that year. In commemoration of that feat, Scott Garten Buick created the “Bobby Labonte Signature Series” (BLSS) which consisted of three decals per car.
Only eleven vehicles received this “BLSS” package. All of the 1987 Grand Nationals that came through the Scott Garten Buick dealership after Bobby won the championship received it. That consisted of ten Grand Nationals and this one GNX, making this GNX “One of One” !
May 1998, at the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, Bobby Labonte verified all of the facts and autographed the car’s dashboard. Obviously, his signature wasn't part of the original commemorative package with the decals, but his personal signature adds an unique and meaningful touch to the vehicle.
Please read the detailed description and view all of the 106 pictures listed below.
Would you buy a car on eBay with four pictures and one paragraph of description? NO.
That is why at Classic Cars Online, our listings will go over and show every area of the vehicle that is up for auction. Body & Paint: Despite the age of the paint, it is all in excellent condition with a deep rich shine. There is NO cracking, checking, or hazing anywhere on the vehicle. With a vehicle that has only 13 original miles, I'm not sure if I need to say it has zero rust issues. The vehicle looks like it did when it left the ASC plant. The plastic bumper fillers were replaced. New identical fillers were painted correctly and properly installed. If someone tells you that their GNX or Grand National still has the original bumper fillers and they are not fading or cracking, then they are lying. After 30 years, the polymers that the original fillers were made from fail and break down. You can't alter time or science.
Again, the vehicle is sporting the three(3) original Bobby Labonte Signature Series (BLSS) decals that Scott Garten Buick installed. All of the black trim pieces are in great shape with no scratches or dents. The factory weatherstripping is not dry rotted and is very flexible. The original window sticker is still glued to the passenger side window.
Interior: The black and gray interior is in new condition, perfect. I've seen zero problems with anything. No scratches, cracks, or marks on any of the interior trim pieces. All of the lights, GNX gauges, and other electrical items are all in working order. The factory radio works great, but I found that the power connector to the factory power antenna was disconnected. (I do not want to connect it in case the power antenna goes u, but doesn't come down. So, the power antenna may or may not work. Untested.) The air conditioning still has the original R12 type freon installed. The A/C compressor doesn't click on due to lower freon pressure. (Tested the compressor by quickly bypassing the lower pressure switch and the A/C compressor clicked on.) The two-tone seats show no wear or fading. The factory headliner is in great shape with no marks or any sagging areas. That being said, don't touch the headliner. The foam material that these original headliners were made from breaks down over the years. If you press on it with a finger, that finger impression with stay in the foam for ever. The black carpeting is perfect along with the factory floor mats.
Engine Compartment: 100% original stock. The compartment is very clean and ready for the shows.
See the "Mechanical" section for more details.
Trunk Compartment: The trunk area is in like new condition. The factory gray carpet is perfect without any marks or stains. Of course all the correct and original jack and jacking tools are still in their original locations along with the space saving spare tire. It does have an electric trunk release. (Button in glove box.)
Chassis - Frame & Undercarriage: The chassis is very clean and original looking. It still retains all of the factory markings, tags and labels. All the bolt heads on the rear GNX suspension that ASC installed still have their white paint inspection dabs on them. Remember, the vehicle has 13 miles and scored a 400/400 at a national show.
Wheels & Tires: The wheels and tires are completely stock and still original. Yes, the tires are still original. These date coded Goodyear Eagle VR tires are in great condition. They were properly stored, (off the vehicle) and show no cracking or dry rotting. (Front: 245/50VR16 - Rear: 255/50VR16)
The GNX 16" wheels are in perfect condition. The polished aluminum areas on the wheels have no scratches, scrapes or nicks. The GNX center caps along with the plastic lug nut covers are in new condition.
Mechanical: With only 13 miles, (Two miles since it was delivered) this "Trailer Queen" has been in and out of storage a lot. I'm sure all the other past owners, (Collectors) did the same things to the vehicle when they purchased the car. Here is what I did. I purchased the car locally. The car was sitting up in the air on a lift. It was resting on wooden blocks with the tires removed. After installing the tires, it was trailered to my home were I began going over the fluids. The antifreeze was drained and flushed. There was a slight leak around the thermostat housing O-ring. The thermostat and O-ring were removed and replaced. New extended life antifreeze/coolant (Red Color) was installed. The fuel system was gone over also. The fuel tank was dropped and checked. I didn't like the way it looked inside and I heard bad things about having the inside of the tank coated. (Clogging injectors). At that point, I decided to replaced the fuel tank. (I still have the original tank if the next owner wants it.) I researched tanks, I found one very close to the original appearance. The new tank also received a new fuel pump and sending unit that goes inside the tank. The original fuel filter was replaced with the correct GM part number filter. The fuel lines where flushed along with the 6 injectors. The oil was changed. Mobil 1 full synthetic oil was used. The engine oil pump was primed and the motor was turned by hand before the key was turned. (Getting the oil up into the upper engine area.) A new battery was installed. (With a "Delco Freedom" decal to make it look original.) The original Delco Freedom battery will also go along with the vehicle. Once the vehicle was started, everything was checked. It starts and idles like it should. I have to feather the accelerator just a little during the warm up process to keep the car from stalling. Once it heats up a little, it idles fine. (May need some fine tuning or adjustments.) There are no leaks in any of the systems.
The brake system was flush. The brake fluid was changed and the brakes where bled. The power master cylinder motor is working great. The recall on the power master pressure switch was performed by one of the past owners. (Gray switch) There are no "Service Soon" or "Brake" lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The original GNX exhaust system is still installed, and it sounds great. I don't see any holes, but do see some signs of rust and potential weak areas on the Y pipe. I'm sure the pipes seen some condensation over the years since it hasn't been driven to heat up the system.
Paperwork & Manuals: Along with the original window sticker, which is still glued onto the passenger side window, the vehicle comes with a binder of original paperwork from ASC/McLaren and the Buick dealership. The original Buick owner's manual(s) and the GNX supplement owner's manual are still in their factory bag/envelope. Also included is all of the original documents from the Buick dealership. (Pre-Delivery Inspection Sheet, Dealer/Customer Bill of Sale, Order Agreement, North Carolina Vehicle Inspection when it was sold new, Certificate of Origin for the Vehicle, and letters from the ASC Corp. about the limited warranty.) Numerous books and magazines that highlight and discuss the GNX are also included. Please view the list below to see all of the limited edition and numbered collectibles that will go along with the vehicle.

"A HIGH-PERFORMANCE INVESTMENT FOR THE FORTUNATE 547".
All of these GNXs came with the same options. Determining the current value usually comes down to the mileage and over all condition. This vehicle is at the top of both of those categories. Now add the fact that this vehicle is unique with the added 1 of 1 "Bobby Labonte Signature Series" package. When these GNXs come up for sale, which is not that often, they are usually sold at high end auction events where you would pay an extra 10% commission on top of the hammer price.
