From 1936 to 1958, Buick’s Special model range represented the marque’s entry level full-size automobile. The Special underwent a full restyling for 1939, with 122-inch wheelbase, a more enclosed nose and a wider grille as the headlights continued their migration from either side of the hood to the tops of the front fenders. This particular car was built in Flint, Michigan (first VIN character = 1).
Under the vee-shaped hood is a 248 CID Dyna-Flash inline eight-cylinder engine linked to a three-speed manual transmission. This engine was made from 1931 to 1953 and sold in Buick automobiles. Like many American automobile makers, Buick adopted the straight-8 engine in 1931 as a more powerful alternative to the previous inline-6 engines. However, unlike most other car makers at the time, Buick had been using a valve-in-head/OHV overhead valve design or I-head since its inception and continued this practice in their inline-8 designs. In earlier years, the engines used cast-in-place bearings that were then machined, which made engine rebuilding an expensive procedure, but after 1937, they began using drop-in bearings. The last year for the Buick Special’s straight-8 was 1953.
This example’s two-tone Zion Maroon over black paint is in good shape but there is a blemish on the right-side hood. The windows are in very good condition, with no cracks or hazing evident. All vehicle lights are intact and clear plus car comes with a pair of amber foglights perched on the front bumper. Those bumper are in great shape, considering their age and the car’s body panels are straight. Car rolls on BFGoodrich Silvertown four-ply tires, size 6.50-16, surrounding factory steel wheels with Buick wheel covers.
Inside, the car’s red, mohair bench seats looks great and offer the driver a commanding view of the road. The red carpet, the headliner, red metal dashboard, three-spoke and red steering wheel, door panels and rear shelf are all in fine order. The gearshift lever moved to the column for 1939, a “three-on-the-tree” setup. There’s even a clock (inoperable) on the glovebox door. Where a salesman used to store his case(s) or a doctor his medical bag now offers plenty of in-car storage for suitcases, duffel bags or backpacks behind the seat, besides the trunk. The mirrors and shift lever are in good condition. This example is a radio delete model. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
Examples of competition to this Buick in 1939 include Mercury’s Eight Business Coupe, DeSoto’s S6 Business Coupe and Packard’s 120 Business Coupe.
