SKYLARK IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!
In case you haven’t heard, uscle Buick's are red hot right now. Finally gaining some financial parity with their Chevrolet and Pontiac brothers, t’s proof of what I’ve known for years: the big, ad Buick's are flat-out awesome cars. With timeless styling, otent power plants, nd a load of luxury features that will cost you thousands more on a Chevelle, uicks are screaming bargains. But I don’t think this will be the case for much longer. However, there’s no question that this 1971 Buick convertible is an awful lot of car for the money. It’s an un-molested survivor that retains all of its original sheet metal throughout. And I mean all of it - no cut-up quarters, o replaced fenders, ot even an ounce of filler anywhere on this well documented, ctual 34,000 mile beauty. But if you like to drive your muscle, his is one that was built for the open road and you won’t have to think twice about taking it out of the garage on the next summer day. As a matter of fact, he current owner of 20 years had me wait weeks for the perfect sunny day to bring her out of hibernation! Buicks always wore more sophisticated colors than their corporate cousins, and the code 55 Coronet Gold that has been repainted to closer resemble Buick's Flame Orange Metallic is definitely cool. Especially next to its Artic White ragtop. Only upon close examination, nd the picky owner's guidance, ere we able to find any imperfections. Almost not worth mentioning are several slight ball point pen scratches that only a perfectionist with an extreme case of obsessive compulsive disorder would lose sleep over. And while a lot of original Buicks were abused, aced, nd left for dead, his one has led a very easy life. Gaps are excellent, nd for a45-year-oldconvertible, it feels amazingly tight and well aligned. This subtle Buick Skylark whispers high performance instead of screaming it like some of its less mature corporate stable mates. The chrome on this car is also impeccable, nd all of the glass is like new. The convertible top is so beautifully fitted that we almost felt guilty folding it for the photo shoot. Speaking of the top, ne push of the button and it lowers and raises without any effort on her or yourself. When folded, he entire top stack is hidden underneath a glistening boot that matches the seats precisely. Power comes from Buick’s unique 350 cubic inch small block V8, hich shares exactly nothing with its corporate cousins. Why GM would build three different 350 cubic inch V8s, 'm not sure, ut I have to say the Buick has a voice of its own. With an emphasis on torque production, he small block moves this convertible with real authority, nd you need to be gentle on the throttle to keep from spinning the factory correct tires. Just as they did in 1941 on their hottest models, his numbers matching engine is bright red and nicely detailed, ncluding a correct ram air housing for the air filter and all of its original decals. It’s nicely detailed, nd as a Buick, hings like power steering and A/C were available and almost expected at this level. This particular Buick is no exception. Another Buick tradition is a TH350 3-speed automatic, hich snaps through the gears precisely in response to your right foot’s commands. As you would expect, he chassis of this car is remarkably clean with no undercoating to hide all of the ugly stuff. You'll be able to place mirrors under your new ride atthe next car show without reservation. Brakes and suspension have been properly attended to, ith an unmistakable Buick-like burble from the dual exhaust system. Newer shocks stiffen up the ride, hich is assisted by original 15-inch Buick road wheels that wear 215/75/15 Firestone Supreme white letter radials. The original spare from the factory adorns the trunk. Exceptional is the only way to describe the flawless and original interior of this Buick. We scoured long and hard looking to find even the slightest rip in the seats, ash, oor panels and carpet and came up empty. The instruments panels are cleaner than my kitchen sink and everything seems to work as it should, ncluding the factory clock. How often do you see that? The original AM radio still lives in the dash and works as it should. If you’ve been disappointed by cobbled-together Chevelles, r the price of GTOsthat have gotten outof hand, his Buick is a great alternative. More unusual than either of its cousins, he Skylark was an upscale hot rod from the #2 division at GM. With good power, beautiful lines, nd that sumptuous interior, t’s a nice change from the standard bright red Chevelles you see at all the shows.
