BMW 1602

Price: US $24,000.00 Item location: Lake Bluff, Illinois, United States
Description:

1972 BMW 1602

Offered here is a 1972 BMW 1602, a rare European-market example imported to the U.S. in 1984. It underwent refurbishment prior to a 2020 Bring a Trailer auction, and I’ve continued improving it since purchasing it in 2023. It runs, drives, and presents very well for a vintage BMW.

???? Recent Mechanical Work (Completed 2023–2024):
  • Rear brake drums, shoes, and wheel cylinders replaced

  • Front wheel bearings replaced

  • New radiator installed

  • New spark plugs, plug wires, ignition coil, points, and condenser

  • New clutch master cylinder

  • Carburetor cleaned and adjusted

  • New fuel level sender and feed hose

  • Exhaust hanger replaced

  • March 2024 inspection recommends fuel tank cleaning/replacement

???? Wheels & Tires:

The car rides on 13” steel wheels with chrome BMW hubcaps, mounted with 185/70 Kumho Solus TA11 tires that were new in 2023 and have 2023 date codes.

????️ Exterior:

Finished in Malaga (original BMW color), with chrome bumpers, a driver-side mirror, and pop-out rear quarter windows. During earlier refurbishment, rust repair was completed on the hood, quarter panels, trunk, valances, and C-pillars.

???? Interior:

The interior features red and black vinyl seats, brown carpeting, Coco mats, and hand-crank windows. The dashboard and door panels are black, consistent with the original minimalist Euro style. A cabin heater is present and functional.

???? Instrumentation:
  • Three-spoke steering wheel

  • 180 km/h speedometer with mph overlay

  • Analog clock

  • Combo gauge for fuel and coolant

  • Five-digit odometer is non-functional (~22k km shown, true mileage unknown)

???? Powertrain:

a 1.6L carbureted M10 inline-four, rated at ~85 hp and 97 lb-ft of torque when new. Paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, the car is lively, analog, and rewarding to drive—just as these classics are meant to be.

???? Additional Items:
  • Clean Florida title in my name

  • Original owner’s manual in factory paper sleeve

  • Partial service records

  • Fitted car cover included

This 1602 is an honest, well-maintained example of one of BMW’s most iconic early models. It’s been kept in dry storage and driven only occasionally. Whether you’re a collector, weekend cruiser, or analog driving enthusiast, this is a fantastic and rare piece of BMW history.

Available for immediate purchase at $24,000. Auction reserve set at $20,000—bid or buy now!
