1985 BMW 535i I AUTOMATIC
Vehicle DetailsI purchased this ‘85 BMW 535i last year and have enjoyed it since while refurbishing it. The car runs and drives good and I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it anywhere. It does have some cosmetic issues which will be discussed below, but the car seems to be a solid, dependable driver. Below is a description of the various systems of the car and a list of all the new parts that were installed during my ownership. Included will be a stack of service records for the bulk of the car’s life, including the original window sticker.
Drivetrain:
The car starts up and runs good. It occasionally has a stumble, but never stalls or fails to start. The previous owner installed a push button to start the car since the ignition switch is broken. You turn the car on with the key, then push the button to start. The transmission was replaced by a BMW dealer several years ago per the included service records and shifts out great. I put four new Kelly 15” tires on it in the past year. Also, a completely new driveshaft, rear cv axles, and new Bilstein shocks were installed during my ownership. The brakes work as they should, but the ABS and Brake light either stay on or come and go randomly, but this doesn’t effect brake performance. New control arms and tie rod ends were installed on the front.
Body:
The blue paint is dull on the hood, top, and trunk, but would probably buff out on the sides. There are some dings and dents in the doors from normal use. There are a couple of places that are bent, one at the front, left air dam and the other behind the right, rear tire which can be seen in the pictures. There is a small rust spot below the rear window which I have shown. The rear bumper has the typical crack which plagues most e28s. All of the glass is good, but the original BMW windshield is getting cloudy around the edges.
Interior:
The interior is in decent shape for the age and miles. The driver’s seat shows a lot of wear and the rear seat has a small tear. The power seat on the driver’s side doesn’t work, but you can hear the motors run. The passenger seat works except for the power headrest. The back of the driver’s seat is off, but included. The front power windows work, the rears don’t. The heat and air fan is noisy and I don’t know if either work. The radio and rear speakers are missing, although the wiring is there. I have no idea if the sunroof works, I would assume it doesn’t.

The vehicle is being sold as-is with no warranties expressed or implied. This is a 38 year old BMW that will have quirks, but is also fun to drive.
