1971 BMW 2002

Engine and Drivetrain

M10 engine with 9.5:1 E12 pistons, upgraded cam and 38/38 Weber. Head and engine overhauled approximately 5,000 miles ago. Machine work included: bored and honed to first overbore, balance complete engine, crankshaft journal weld, crankshaft grind, recondition rod and align, flywheel resurface, crank shaft polished and mic, balance rods. Mechanic installed new main and rod bearings, block and head seals, oil sender, timing chain, wrist pin bushings and oil pump chain. Work on head: Grind valves and seats, new valve guides installed. E12 9.5:1 first overbore pistons. Motor mounts replaced w/Ireland Engineering mounts in 2009. Pertronix ignition. Blue Bosch coil. Unsure the brand camshaft but previous owner said it was a 298°. Non-professional opinion: it sounds more aggressive than a 292° and less than a 304°. Has a four-into-one header only; no exhaust system is currently installed.

71°Celsius thermostat. Stock fan.

Drive train is a four-speed manual transmission currently, purchase includes a Getrag 5 speed transmission and upgrade kit (see photo for contents). A machine shop should be able to shorten and re-install the current driveshaft. 4 speed transmission lightly grinds into second gear if shifted quickly. 320i limited slip differential 3.91:1 installed with redrilled flanges installed. 3.64:1 differential included.

Car runs. Car was in long term storage for the last 10 years and started every 2-6 months. Developed sticky float valve as I was getting ready for sale so carb should be cleaned out and probably rejetted due to storage wear and gas deposits.

Wheels and tires

14” BMW bottlecaps with Yokohama A032R tires, tires are sunworn.

Brakes & suspension

Car has stainless steel brake line upgrade. Super Blue brake fluid.

Front and rear sway bar upgrades, Top End Performance front strut tower and engine brace, and rear shock brace, with rear battery/shock brace kit.

Lowering springs installed, KYS shocks, see photos.

Interior

Super comfy front Recaro seats with original German sales slip from 1981. Original rear seats and rear seat belts. Door panels with 4” speaker cutouts (extra uncut door panels included). Fresh looking carpet kit from World Upholstery. Stock dash with some cracks. Wired for CD player. See photos for speaker locations under the rear seats and in the rear hat deck. Hazard switch is broken but have extra for replacement. Headlights wired with separate on/off switch than stock. Gages, warning lights work. Speedometer mileage is not correct. Dash lights do not work.

Bolt-in roll cage installed, with removeable cross brace. 4-point harnesses for the driver and passenger seats installed. Lap belts functional in front (racing harness) and rear seats (stock).

MOMO steering wheel. BMW logo shifter.

Headliner in good shape.

Sunroof car does not leak. Has not been opened recently to check function. Retention spring in sunroof crank handle broke so handle does not stay recessed.

Rearview mirror is missing.

Passenger rear window latch is broken.

Body

No bumper or body dents, no known Bondo areas. Needs paint, see pics. Hood and trunk lids clean. New carpet kit installed. Gas tank flushed and cleaned (2019). Chrome on bumpers is shiny. Roof has surface rust. See photos for other spots.

My next plans had been…

Refurb carburetor. Replacement screw in seat rail. Relocate battery back to front. Light safety check. Install 5-speed Getrag. Exhaust system.
