1973 BMW 2002 Base Model - great shape / investment / restoration / no rust
1973 BMW 2-Series
Harder to find Roundie from 1973 (last year for roundie's).Got this car May 2017, hoping to have fully restored it, but need to sell it now. It is a great stock, base car to either drive around or use as a starting point for a full restoration. Since getting it, I installed a heavy duty 3-core aluminum radiator, new weber, new wiper reservoir, new seat belts. Also fixed left side taillights, horn, left headlight and the windshield washer pump. I don't know the mileage of the car, as the previous owner had replaced the speedometer, but it runs pretty good for a 45 year old car. The transmission shift nice, no grinding too. You'd eventually want to rebuild the engine, even though it runs fine now. It smokes a little when you coast for a while and give it gas, but doesn't smoke if you're driving around.
Things I wished I got to: fixing the windows (they don't roll down well, only about half way. I did get the driver's side window cranking assembly, never did put it on, but you'll get it with the car), fuel gauge doesn't work (I think it's the gauge itself, as I've replaced the sending unit, and I did get a used pod, never did put it on nor tested it) and the door seals needs to be re-glued. Only things non-stock are the front seats... I believe they are from a later model 2002, according to the previous owner. Oh, the A/C doesn't work, oh well.
Given the state of the financial markets, probably not the best time to sell it, but this model is sure to rise in value in the next few years. One of the few cult cars that haven't skyrocketed yet. So here's your chance.
You'll need to arrange pickup/transportation at your own cost.
Oh, BTW the 11-99 Foundation license plate frame is NOT included :)
I'm appending the text from the previous owner so you get an idea of what he'd done to it before I got it.-------------------------
This is our 1973 BMW 2002 that we bought last year but doesn't get driven around and collecting dust (literally you can see the layers of dust on the dash and all over the car). We bought the car from the3rd owner and kept the title still open to keep the number of ownership low also. Title is clean and clear dating back to 1997 and so3rd owner owned for 19 years before we got it. The car seems to have been gone through some restoration at some point of3rd owners possession but I have no documents of it. I don't know how old the paint is etc. but it looks beautiful. No major dents, scratches or dings. Just normal wear and tear of being 44 years. The entire suspension is stock and so is the engine. I have recently done a lot of maintenances and I have all records of the things I have done to the car:
New plugs
New Wires
New distributor cap
New Rotor
New points
New valve cover gasket
New Clutch
New suspension Bushings in front
New Shifter Bushings
New Stainless steel brake lines front and back
New Brake Master Cylinder
New Clutch Slave cylinder
New Clutch Master Cylinder
New Bosch Starter
New Alternator
New belts and hoses
New Thermostat
New Front rotors
New rear drum shoes
New front brake pads
New Front L+R brake Calipers
New Rear L+R Brake wheel Cylinders
Fresh new oil change
New battery
New 13 inch tires
New L+R Door gaskets
New Trunk seal
New Front and Back Windshield and Windscreen gaskets
None of the above listed parts needed replacing other than the shifter bushings but because I didn't have any records of when these were done, I didn't want to take a chance on the unforgiving TX highways or roads (If you breakdown, some may drive over you here).
The interior has beautiful black carpet, door panels are original uncut in dark blue. Headliner is white and in great shape. Seats have been replaced from a later 2002 that are very supportive and comfortable for long distance or daily driving. Not sagging or feeling of springs etc.and so is the instrument cluster from a later model 2002 (all done by previous owner). The dash has some cracks and so a dash cap has been installed that looks pretty good. It is just an overlay and you can remove it easily. The car is setup for AC but I don't know if it works. Nothing happens when I turn the switch on. Recently I took the car to a local BMW shop and they told me the compressor spins free and they could put Freon to check etc. I said no worries. This car doesn't and won't get driven and so I left it at that. I have posted a Video or two of the car driving around and it drives good. I wouldn't hesitate driving it any distance. However, it is 44 year old car and I can't express any warranty or imply anything. You are welcome to speak to the BMW shop who recently inspected the 02 and did some service also. Again, the car starts, runs and drives great. Has no over heating issues in Hot TX summer days. Drives straight and great. No smoke or oil leak. The car has no rust that I can see but it looks like the spare tire tubarea had some rust at some point in its life that was fixed by a body shop when the car was painted. The rockers, doors, underside, frame rails and nose panels don't look to have any rust.
Please understand that I am an individual and not a dealer and can't jack around going back and forth with anyone. I ask you to do all serious inspection, serious bidders too. Please don't bid and retract etc. telling me your son accidentally bid or wife is so upset you are buying another car etc. I don't need any stories and please I won't give you any either. I require that you leave me a deposit of $700 through paypal after the auction ends and the remainder of balance in cash before picking up the car or a bank transfer is fine also. Please understand that all sales are final and ask any and all questions before placing a bid. Please follow through. I reserve the right to end the auction anytime I like.
