1970 BMW 2800CS -I'll do my best to highlight everything about the car and a little history that I do know.
Little about me and some history:
The reason for selling this car is I have 3 other project cars that I am working on and I don't see myself getting to this car for 5 years. (1974 Mazda RX-4, 1985 Porsche 911, and 73 BMW 3.0CS) I will hopefully keep the cars and hand them down to my family, but it always seems someone comes up to me at a Cars and Coffee or Car show and offers me enough to make me sell. Then I regret it later. I've restored/modified some pretty nice cars in the past, including, 74 BMW 2002 with an S14, 93 Twin Turbo Supra, 87 Turbo Supra, 95 NSX, and on and on.. I typically buy cars that I intent to restomod. I never seem to leave my cars stock.
I saw this car last year and wanted grabbed because I've always wanted to do a serious modified version of the IMSA style CSL. Time and reality is that I am not likely to get to this car in my "able" lifetime. In my mid-50s and realize I can't crawl under cars as fast, lift as much and bend as far anymore. So, I am working on two cars now and want to finish them by next summer and then start on the 3rd, which is a 3 year project minimum for me.
This 1970 BMW E9 is a very nicely kept car and great for someone that just wants to do a little maintenance and drive or can do a rolling restore. Most everything works except the AC. All power accessories are working well and the interior, dash and carpets are in very good condition.
at some point the rear seats were recovered in leather and the front seats are in very good condition as well. They are protected with Sheepskin covers.
This is a desirable non-sunroof car from California. I purchased the car with a salvaged title, based on the previous owners explanations that the car was in a front driver's side corner accident. Repairs were minimal, but knowing how insurance companies work, the car was insured on a normal policy, which has very limited payouts before they claim salvaged. I always recommend carrying stated value classic car insurance. In any case the car is in good shape.
Now, there is issues, like a dime sized ding in the hood (see pictures), some small surface rust that appears to be a result of removing the rear window at some point and scratching the paint. (see pictures). There is some surface rust under the car but NOTHING that indicates rot or prior repair. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS I grabbed the car when it was for sale. There is also a small ding on the trim under the door as well.
The worse thing about his car is some of the rubber needs to be replaced. It is old / original and I would take it all off and replace it all as part of my restoration. Also one of the BMW caps on the Alpina style wheels is missing. I drove the car down from San Francisco to LA when I bought it and it ran great.
It has an aluminum upgraded radiator, it's lowered a couple of inches, has a header and stainless steel exhaust system that is near new. There is a passenger's side tie rod end as a rip that should be replaced and I have the part for that. The car runs a little rough at start up and could use a good tune up, but as I said, I drove the car for ~400 miles the day I picked it up and have literally driven the car 60 miles in the last year. Oh and it has a dog-leg 5 speed transmission (rare), which was originally an automatic (badges still say automatic). The bumpers are nice. It does leak a few drops of oil when parked and my plan was to replace all the gaskets and clean up the motor, but it runs very strong.
Ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them. I have about 50 photos, but ebay only allows for 24.
I hate to sell and I'm sure I'm going to regret this in a few years. Best of luck.
ps. I have placed a reserve price for a little less than the price I paid for the car last year. Prices have definitely gone up on these cars and I see 2002s going for what these were a few years ago.
