Description:

1956 Bentley Other

I am selling my 1956 Bentley S1 with a low reserve. Clear California pink slip. I purchased this Bentley in 1980 and drove it around for several years.

I have owned several other S1s and different Bentleys and Rolls-Royces over the years but this was my first PMC (Proper Motor Car). In the late 90s I decided to restore it completely with a ground up restoration. I removed the drivetrain and sent the frame and body to a friend's shop in Oxnard. The Oxnard shop was instructed to repair rust issues around the rocker panels and fenders paint the frame re-fit the body and paint the body. I was in no hurry for the work to be finished because I had plenty of other cars little space and many things happening in my life family and career. It is a long story but the Oxnard shop owner's son-in-law who took over the business finally returned the Bentley in 2015. Most of the rust repairs have been finished but not all. The frame was painted. The body was also painted but very very poorly. It needs to be completely redone. There was hardly any attention paid to panel fit so the front fenders as well as the four doors need to be properly fitted. The body is not sitting correctly on the frame and needs to be properly attached. I have installed the fenders and hood so you can see what the car is supposed to look like. I plan on removing the fenders and hood so the new owner can transport the Bentley.

NOT INCLUDED IN SALE: motor transmission brakes interior bumpers radiator hubcaps shell trim electrical wiring chrome pieces etc.

INCLUDED: everything you see in pictures plus steering linkage steering gears steering column and steering wheel. Note: This is a right hand drive vehicle. Also included are the front and rear windshields side window glass for each door as well as manual window regulators inside and outside door handles.

The rolling shell Bentley is located at my old home in Chino Hills California 91709. I need to move it out of Chino Hills on or before Sunday July 5th because my escrow closes on Monday July 6th and I must vacate. I still have the motor transmission interior etc. and I plan on using these as spares for my other S1 unless someone makes me a reasonable offer. I don't really have a place to store the Bentley S1 at my new home in Central California and I don't need more projects but I will be forced to move it to my new home if it doesn't sell. I'm listing this Bentley on June 20th.

This Bentley is also listed locally for sale. Therefore I reserve the right to terminate the eBay listing at any time.

The rolling shell is a great start for a custom rat rod or hot rod with a monster engine. Another route is to drop in modern components and engine in order to make it a limousine. Or chop the top and make it look like a million dollar convertible.

General History of the Bentley S:

Bentley S was a luxury car produced by Bentley Motors Limited from 1955 until 1959. Bentley (and Rolls-Royce)'s first true complete redesign of their standard production car after World War II and their last standard production car with an independent chassis. These cars were given a new V8 engine in late 1959 and those cars are identified as S2. Twin headlamps and a facelift to the front arrived in late 1962 and those cars are known as S3. This shape remained in production with those modifications until late 1965 when it was replaced with the completely new chassis-less monocoque T series. It was announced at the end of April 1955 and it was noted that the existing Continental model would continue. The new standard steel saloon replaced the R type standard steel saloon which had been in production with modifications since 1946. It was a more generously-sized five or six seater saloon with the body manufactured in pressed steel with stressed skin construction. Doors bonnet and luggage locker lid were of aluminum. Having a totally new external appearance although with the traditional radiator grille the main differences from the R type were: three inches longer wheelbase lower build without reducing headroom and with an enlarged luggage boot softer suspension with electrically operated control of rear dampers lighter steering and improved braking engine capacity increased to 4887cc the same size as used in the Bentley Continental four speed automatic gearbox was standard with ability to select individual ratios if desired. As with the preceding Mark VI and R type Bentleys there was almost no difference between standard Bentley and Rolls-Royce models; this Bentley S differing only in its radiator grille shape and badging from the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I. The models shared the 4.9 L (4887 cc/298 in³) straight-6 engine. They were the last vehicles to be powered by descendants of the engine originally used in the Rolls-Royce Twenty from 1922 to 1929. The bore was 95.25 mm (3.7 in) stroke was 114.3 mm (4.5 in) and compression ratio 6.6:1. Twin SU carburetors were fitted with upgraded models from 1957. A 4-speed automatic transmission was standard with a 4-speed manual available as an option until 1957. A standard wheelbase car tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1957 had a top speed of 103 mph (166 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 13.1 seconds. A fuel consumption of 16.1 miles per imperial gallon (17.5 L/100 km; 13.4 mpg-US) was recorded. The test car which had the optional power steering cost £6305 including taxes of £1803.
