1965 AMC Rambler American 440 2 door Hardtop

This Rambler American is believed to have spent most of its life in the southwest United States (California and New Mexico). All of the metal backs up this premise - no apparent rust. The background from the previous owner is that it was completely stripped and painted inside and out, about 25 years ago at 63,000 miles, reportedly by Boyd Coddington's Shop in California. I see no rust bubbles in the paint, the floors and unibody "frame" rails are good and solid; all the panels look original to me. The interior headliner is completely custom: consists of a high quality tapestry to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of US Route 66. the car restored specifically to participate in the "Stater Bros, Route 66 Rendezvous Presented by Firestone" in 2001. After 25 years, it looks like some of this headliner will need new glue to properly adhere again to the underside of the roof panel. The thick tapestry is in excellent condition though. It is apparent that most of the chrome trim (inside and out) was removed, prior to painting, and then restored to near excellent condition prior to reinstallation. Although the entire drivetrain was rebuilt, including engine components such as the alternator, carburetor, etc. (even the rear axle was rehabbed professionally by a gear specialty shop), the three speed Borg Warner transmission exhibits slippage while accelerating in first and second gears. Once in high, it runs perfectly, even at full throttle . These transmissions used adjustable bands, which could possibly be the cause. The 232 cubic inch six cylinder engine was the top option for 1965 and came with a Carter two barrel carburetor, that was rated at 155 hp. Starts right up, with no visible smoke, although it seems to have an intermittent vacuum leak, most likely from the double acting fuel pump. Some other interesting features done by Coddington at the time of restoration:- HiFonics XO Vision, Model #XOD1730, w/touchscreen; can play DVD, CD,MP4 and VCD as well as AM/FM radio. Mounted in custom, color matched center console. Also an analog clock- Seats completely reupholstered with color coordinated beige vinyl and knitted cloth (wool?) inserts, w/contrasting dark brown piping- Custom embroidered "Rambler" logo at the top of the front and rear seat backs.- Front bucket seats can be fully reclined to an almost horizontal position- Sunvisors upholstered in the matching beige knit cloth. Right side visor has OEM Rambler vanity mirror.- Original door panels and rear seat side panels restored with original trim- 1" diameter custom made front anti-sway bar- 3/4" diameter rear anti-sway bar- Manual front disc brakes (10" diameter), rear drums with dual master cylinderOther features:- Front tires: Ironman 195/55R15; Rear tires Uniroyal Tiger Paw 225/60R15.
