1966 AMC Rambler American 440

This car was originally built by Ken Keir of Keir Race Cars in Leonardtown, MD a handful of years back. While he does own a coveted 1969 Scrambler in his collection, he built this as a fun street/strip car. It has approximately 2k miles on it since being built.
Exterior:
The Rambler started out as a straight Florida six-cylinder rust-free donor. It was disassembled and painted in a 2-stage urethane 2008 Nissan ‘Flash Green’ metallic. It looks as good as it did the day it was done. The paint is like glass, and there are no replacement panels or body filler on the car. As you can see from the video and photos, it is very straight and clean. All original stainless bright work and trim, along with new seals, were installed once the paint was completed.
It had all new brakes and hardware installed when built as well (drum front and rear). You could add disc brakes to the front-end but the car is so light, it's really not necessary. It has power steering, new suspension components, welded in ‘square tubing’ frame connectors and Lakewood traction bars. The rear differential is a posi unit from an AMX. It was rebuilt and houses 3.54:1 gears.
The 15” wheels are one-offs made by Wheel Vintiques out of SoCal ($1,000+). They have a custom offset and were powder coated. The beautifully restored stock hubcaps fit perfectly, adding to the stock/ sleeper looks desired on this very unique ride.
Interior:
The seats were reupholstered to match the ‘60’s period. The door panels as well as the headliner are original. All factory gauges work accept the original radio and temp. An AutoMeter temp gauge was added instead to the lower dash. Next to that is a mini Autometer Pro-lite to alert you of oil pressure. Mounted to the steering column you will find a fully programmable MSD 89631 Digital Shift Light, complete with digital RPM readout. In case the wonderful exhaust note just isn't enough, acustom aftermarket Pioneer stereo was added cleanly under the dash. It is complete with AM/FM, Sirius XM, USB, AUX, and hands-free Bluetooth, with built-in mic. A few stealth aftermarket speaker enclosures were installed under the seats to add a little volume to the in-dash speaker. The original owner's manual, brochures and such will be included with the car as well.
Drivetrain:
Power comes from a professionally rebuilt 304 cu. in. AMC motor with a slight overbore and has been internally balanced. It runs on pump gas and has 10:1 compression. Topping it off is a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads and intake manifold. Sitting above the intake to feed this healthy motor is a blueprinted Holley 650 double pumper topped with a Moroso air cleaner. The ignition is handled by MSD with a 6AL mounted in the trunk and a billet distributor. The battery is a newer Optima Red Top, also relocated to the trunk. The cam is a hydraulic ‘Thumper’ Comp Cam, not a roller. The builder estimated approximately 400hp at the crank. It has long tube headers connected to dual 2.5” exhaust system, complete w/Flowmaster mufflers. The sound this car makes is absolutely amazing. It's a total sleeper until you turn the key. The cooling is handled by an oversized radiator and custom shroud. It does great hanging around 180 deg. on hot SoCal summer days.
Note the ‘custom’ one-off elements under the hood as well. Such as the custom coil/ breather bracket, dipstick holder, and custom deep oil pan with a perimeter reinforcement to protect it from scraping. A lot of detail and thought went into this car.
The transmission is an AMC 727 Torque Flight which has been blueprinted and runs a “Boss Hog” converter with about a 3500-stall speed. The shifter is a Precision unit. No manual valve body. It shifts like a typical automatic, or you can bump through the gears. With a factory curb weight of 2,500lbs., this car gets up and goes. Power-to-weight ratio is a big factor with a car like this.
Summary:
For a 57yr. old car, this vehicle is an absolute blast. It does not have A/C or heat and she's a little cold blooded, but the car has given me smiles for miles. My goal is it to end up in a good home with someone that will enjoy it and keep it as clean and babied as me.
