Description:

1976 AMC Hornet

This auction is for a very unique AMC Hornet. It started as the rare 2 door sedan. A Jeep 4.2 Liter High Output straight six was transplanted into the Hornet along with the 5 speed manual transmission. The wiring harness, dash cluster and steering column were also installed into the Hornet. As a result, the Hornet retains the later engine fuel injection and easy drivability.
Many other rally, "sport purpose" bits were also added. Including front and rear sway bars from an AMX, a new, quicker manual steering box and AMC Javelin front disc brakes.Additionally, fully powered bucket seats from a later model BMW 3 Series were installed using custom fabricated brackets that retain full power function. Cobra type, spun alloy race mirrors(raydyot) were placed on both doors-again, with custom fabricated brackets.New carpet, seat upholstery and door panels freshen up the interior.Mechanically there are many new parts including: disc calipers, steering box, ball joints, tie rods, steering arm, shocks, lowering springs, custom header and free flow airbox. The exhaust is a custom dual pipe that exits out the side.
Mopar factory type hood pins are fitted.
There is also a modern stereo head unit with Bluetooth and new speakers.New American Racing wheels and new H-Rated tires are installed. This Trans Am tribute Hornet drives very well and is a blast to take to a cars and coffee event as it's always the only one. Many folks comment that not only is it cool, but that they've never seen one before. It handles well, has good power and always fires right up with it's factory fuel injection. It is painted bright yellow and is a good "driver" quality paint job. The period graphics are vinyl and easily removed, in need be.The gauges, windows, wipers, horn, lights, etc all work as they should.
There were many other new bits fitted during this build and its ready to enjoy now. The 5 speed manual works well and has a vintage appearing Hurst white ball on it.This Hornet has always been on the west coast and doesn't have any rust that I'm aware of. It's a great way to drive a vintage American Junior "Muscle" "Pony" car without the big price tag attached to an AMX, Camaro, Mustang or Cuda.Is it perfect? No. The Jeep dash could be fitted a bit better and there are a few nicks, scrapes, etc in the paint as well as a slightly ill fitting trunk lid. The hood also has a minor crease in it. Although this AMC runs clean and well, it is not currently smog legal in California as it doesn't have it's original catalytic convertor. It would probably be fairly easy to get approval from the smog referee after an inspection. I see no evidence of prior accident or rust repair though.Again, this Hornet would not only be a blast at any local Cars and Coffee, but would be perfect for a vintage car rally or driving event. Certainly a conversation starter.Offered at a low reserve, thanks for looking.
