Description:
1987 Alfa Romeo Milano PLATINUM
This is not a project car--it is daily-driver qualityThis Milano Platinum is an '87, I bought it in '91 from the original owner. He had it serviced from the selling dealer the entire time (warranty). It came with all paperwork. I've had the car ever since, always maintained. Basically, whatever the car needed, it got. I have a full service history from specialist shops. Car always stored out of the elements.
All the big stuff works:
- The powertrain, including belts and hoses, water pump, clutch, shift linkage. Engine starts first try 80% of the time
- Suspension, tires, steering rack and power brakes (rotors, calipers, pads; ABS removed when it stopped working)
- Interior, including R-12 air conditioning, ARC, seat motors, power antenna
- Cosmetics: Paint is mostly original and shines well; upholstery/carpet intact, with just a little surface cracking on the driver's seat
Some little things I live with:
- The push button for the trip meter broke so the meter is stuck at 000.5 miles (odometer works fine)
- The driver's side mirror seems like a couple of motor gear teeth stripped because the mirror glass moves in one direction but not another
- A fog lamp needs replacing
- The middle and rear guibos have some hairline cracks, so they will need replacing eventually but it's by no means urgent
- The locking gas cap doesn't
- There's a small weep from a power steering hose --my wrench checked it out and told me it's too small to worry about.
- The sunroof motor is getting weak -- one time in ten you push the button and nothing happens. In that case, just pop a trim panel by hand and use a screwdriver to manually turn the motor one rev (there's a designed-in screwdriver slot for the purpose), then everything works again. I keep a small screwdriver in the glovebox just for that.
Body-wise, the car has never been crashed. I did have a wall-mounted garage shelving unit detach and fall on the hood, so that was resprayed; my ex backed into a bollard and damaged the rear bumper so that was replaced; left-rear lower panel was resprayed when I had some wheel-arch rust repaired. There is a tiny rust patch at the leading edge of the passenger-side rear-wheel arch. I first noticed that a year ago, maybe two. It's the size of a coin. Pictures show paint defects and chips on the decklid and doors, and the rust spot.
The car is almost showroom stock. The few changes I made include:
- S cams
- Blaupunkt radio/cassette with AUX and RCA inputs
- 36% tint on side/rear windows; sunband on windshield
For a Milano that's still in actual service after 30+ years (ie, not sitting under a cover and driven 3x/year), I don't think you'll find one nicer.
