1971 Alfa Romeo GTV/GTAm clone - ultimate street and track day car
1971 Alfa Romeo GTV
As second owner, purchased this 1971 GTV 1750 in Arizona around 1992 and it stayed in Arizona, here I used it as a stock street car, ntil 1997. In 1998, moved to the NYC area where it was garaged and rarely used, ut was still well maintained and kept rust free. I won't go into details on the work that was done on the car during this period because, rom 2007 - 2009, t underwent a complete rebuild by Ryan Pilla, SCCA pro-driver who runs and operates the Car Doctor and Turnkey Drive. Ryan prepares and maintains customers' racecars and provides a fleet of race cars for rental during his private track days.
Together, yan and I planned and Ryan executed a total rebuild of my car with the intention of creating a car that would be exciting to drive on the street (neither a garage queen nor a daily driver) and still be able to be driven to the track for a track day or the occasional vintage race. This two-year project involved, mong other things, he following:
Installation of rivet mounted fender flares and total paint job.
Interior re-work with removal of rear seats and installation of new carpets, eadliner, oll bar, arbon-fiber leather seats from Ferrari 348 Speciale, acing harnesses on both sides, emovable racing steering wheel and custom aluminum dash with racing gauges.
Polished, orted and balanced custom race engine with all of the goodies, .e., ustom machined head, eavy duty valves, uides, tems and springs, 1 mm cams, igh compression pistons, luminum flywheel, 5 Webers with stacks and custom air intake, lectronic ignition, lutch, lternator, tc. It was dyno'ed at slightly over 200 horsepower. While it may sound hairy, t's really very nice even to putter around town.
On the exhaust end, here is a custom manifold and side exit pipes. The entire drive train was upgraded and a heavy-duty rear axle with limited slip differential was installed. Aluminum axle extenders were added front and rear, s well as a racing gas tank, ross-drilled brakes and 15X7 Panasports.
A new adjustable suspension was installed with camber adjustable arms and bushings, rop links, eavy-duty shocks, prings and sway bars, tc. The car is lowered but still streetable. It can be lowered further for the track. Needless to say, ven at its present height, t handles like a slot car.
The project was a labor of love and no expense was spared. After completion, managed to bring the car to one track day and had the time of my life. Shortly afterwards, was forced to stop track days due to medical issues. For the last several years, have only driven the car on local streets and back roads accumulating about 3,000 miles since the rebuild. Within the last three months, incenzo Latino of Auto Elite installed a starter, lternator, attery, lutch, efurbished the top and bottom of the engine, erformed a tune-up and detailing.
