MotoeXotica is excited to offer this rare and gorgeous survivor, a 1962 Willys Wagon. This beautiful example came from Sedona, Arizona, where it belonged to the town’s fire chief, who drove the car in parades and used it for local business. The owner’s son, also a fire fighter, later moved to California and brought the car with him.
Its new as original 230 CID Tornado overhead cam inline six-cylinder engine with four-wheel drive and front locking hubs connected to a four-speed manual transmission. The front brakes have been upgraded to discs. New engine parts include air-conditioning compressor, carburetor, radiator, alternator, coil and starter. This vehicle has a powder-coated frame, new springs, shocks and body mounts and new two-stage, red and yellow paint.
Overall straight sheetmetal on this dry Southwestern body. Its oak floor runners have been refinished and it includes a metal-and-wood roof rack with wooden inlays. There are two chrome jerry fuel cans, one on each front fender and they are lockable. Atop the roof rides a metal-and-wood rack. Wagon rides on P235/75R15 Coker radial tires with whitewalls wrapped around aftermarket 15-inch yellow steel wheels.
Inside, the car still has its original interior except for new green textured vinyl upholstery. The seat and window frames have been powder-coated yellow to match the exterior. The floor has refinished oak runners. It has the original Motorola AM radio and comes with period correct Frigiking air-conditioning. The windshield wipers don’t work, however, all gauges work as designed. Other interior features are sliding window glass, original steering wheel, fold-down tailgate and yellow window trim.
The Willys Jeep Station Wagon is the first mass-market all-steel station wagon designed and built as a passenger vehicle. It was produced in the United States from 1946 to 1965. With over 300,000 wagons and its variants built in the U.S., it was one of Willys’ most successful post-World War II models. Its production coincided with consumers moving to the suburbs.
The Jeep Tornado engine was the first post-World War II U.S.-designed mass-produced overhead cam (OHC) automobile engine. The 230.5 CID straight-six was introduced in mid-year 1962 and replaced the flathead 6-226 Willys Super Hurricane that was used since 1954. Output was 140 hp at 4000 rpm and 210 lbs·ft of torque at 1750 rpm.
