1973 Volkswagen Thing --

The Volkswagen Thing originated as a German runabout military vehicle known as the "Kubelwagen"...Kubel meaning "bucket" and Wagen meaning "Car". A name, which is quite fitting for the design. The Thing was only called "The Thing" in North America where it went on sale in 1973; elsewhere it was known as the Trekker, the Safari or simply Type 181. Spartan by design, the Thing became quite popular in the US market as it appealed especially to the youth. The Thing... cost only $2,775.00 dollars making it affordable to the American public. To this day, the quirky Thing, is recognizable and popular among motoring enthusiasts. GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this cheeky 1973 Volkswagen Thing for your consideration. Originally from Mexico, this Thing is finished in a lovely shade of Laguna Blue and is overall in very nice shape. The body is nice and generally clean although there is a bit of surface rust seen in some seems and in the inner fenders. It has black painted bumpers, 14in painted steel wheels with brand new BFGoodrich all terrain tires, black cloth top, and side curtains. The current owner has had the vehicle for around ten years now and says the hood was repainted, windshield replaced, and routine servicing at Munks Motor Classics in Waterford Michigan. The interior is very spartan but in good condition. Black vinyl seats are in good shape and the vehicle has floor mats and working windshield wipers. This little Thing drives very well and would make the perfect summer beach vehicle. Cheerful and easy to fix, its no wonder that these little Things are so revered! Comes with lots of service history and two keys. To see over 80 photos of this car, including undercarriage please visit our website
