The Volkswagen Beetle â€" officially the Volkswagen Type 1 informally in Germany the Käfer (German "beetle") and in parts of the English-speaking world the Bug â€" is a two-door four-passenger rear-engine economy car that was manufactured and marketed by German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. There were two Beetles for the first time in 1971 the familiar standard Beetle and a new larger version different from the windscreen forward. All Beetles received an engine upgrade: the optional 1500 cc engine was replaced by a 1600 cc with twin-port cylinder heads and a larger relocated oil cooler. The new engine produced 60 hp. The ventilation system was improved with the original dash-top vents augmented by a second pair aimed directly at the driver and passenger.
