Volkswagen Bay Window Bus

1971 model year

‘Walk-through’ Camper model

Sliding cargo door right side

Rear seat folds down to form a bed

Sleeping area above in pop top

*Last year for the upright motor and first for front disc brakes

Body and Paint

Body is in very nice condition

Minimal rust especially considering it’s age

Paint is two tone base coat / clear coat system

Colors- Harvest Moon Beige and Root Beer Brown

The paint shines nice and body is straight- as mentioned before do not expect perfection. The bus is not a show car. Expect that there will be blemishes; some waviness with small scratches or chipping

Interior metal was not painted to match exterior- inside colors are red and beige

Rust

The left and right sides of front floor show rust repair by previous owner- not a professional job. There are some pinholes in both areas that could use attention.

The battery tray is rusted out and will need complete replacement

I found a quarter sized hole at the front tire wheel well area towards the back.

Underbody

Frame appears to be solid

Engine and Transmission

I do not know the history of the engine or transmission. The engine appears to be a 1600 dual port. What I can say is that the bus runs smoothly and shifts perfectly. Engine had a recent tune up to include oil, plugs, wires, points, new coil and fuel pump. Like most Vw’s it leaks a drop or two of oil after use. The transmission works as it should and shifts nicely through all gears. I have noticed a slight ‘whistling’ sound when the clutch pedal is depressed all the way however it doesn’t seem to affect performance.

Interior

Dash is clean

New stereo and speakers

New Headliner

New sun visors and clips

New window curtains

Front door panels are used and in ‘ok’ condition

Front and rear seats appear to have the original black vinyl material- nice shape with no visible holes or rips

Rear seat is grey cloth material with black vinyl edging to match rear compartment cushion

Rear seat folds down to form a bed together with the rear compartment cushion

New rubber mat for font floor

Cargo area floor is covered by basic gray carpeting

Rear interior panels are made of wood and primered white so new owner can paint to liking

Electrical

Good working order

Battery is 12 volt used

Camper Pop Up

Fiberglass in very good condition; no cracks

New outer edge seal; new seal that covers top separation

Opens, closes and locks without issue

Has extra sleeping area inside of top

Material in good condition

Miscellaneous

Clear Title

Tires are almost new except for spare which is used

New hubcaps and beauty rings

German Bumpers were sanded and repainted Vw ‘Silver White’

Glass is clean and clear

Single key for ignition and all door locks

New front and side marker lenses

New rear hatch window and body seal and side stationary window seal

Rest of bus seals are used and have NOT been replaced

Rear hatch cargo area is nice but a previous owner cut out an ‘access panel’

Brakes have not been touched- they do not leak and function properly

Ignition key sometimes sticks a bit

Passenger door sticks and sometimes only opens from the inside

Horn Button on steering wheel not working; general replacement works
