Up for sale is my 1964 Volkswagen Beetle. Manufactured in February of 1964, this car has been much loved for more than 50 years! The car was originally sold at Colome Motors in Montebello, California and its original owner – a school teacher - drove it for 7 years. He sold the Beetle to one of his students and it was a part of her family for 34 years! The car has spent its entire life in Southern California’s dry climate allowing it to be rust-free.

In 2004 the car was treated to a compete restoration by the third owner. Attention was given to virtually every part of the car.

A certification from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen confirms the Beetle retains its original 1200cc engine. The power-plant was rebuilt as part of the restoration. The vehicle's actual mileage traveled is unclear but a repair order from 1994 shows it at 90,115 miles so we can assume it currently has traveled 110,297 miles. The car was originally produced with a Pearl White exterior and a red leatherette interior. As part of the restoration, a complete color-change to an eye-catching Ruby Red was performed and the interior was changed to gray leatherette.

Please see the photo section below for an extensive list of what was done to the car.

I have owned the car since 2012 and have enjoyed every minute! What really drew me to this Beetle was the fact that it was unmolested. So many VW's have been modified but this one still presents as it would have in 1964, right down to the original 6-volt electrical system. The fact that it's spent its entire life in Southern California and still has its original black license plate, and even the original plate frame from the dealer where it was sold new, really made it a special find for me. Collectors from all over the world look for cars like this. And here it is. Driving the car is not only rewarding but also rewarding for all those who see it motoring down the street. It’s hard not to feel like a celebrity in this car. Few automobiles are more nostalgic than these VWs. Even the smell inside the car is that iconic VW aroma from days gone by.

Life changes force me to seek the next owner for the car.

The car starts up and drives nicely! The 1200cc engine was never intended to provide exhilarating performance but it gets me where I’m going. Over the past five years I have replaced the tires, generator and voltage regulator, the horn and horn relay, the wiper motor and turn signal switch. I added a Bambus shelf under the dash – it is not only functional, it looks great too! The roof rack is always a conversion starter and nicely sets this Beetle apart from others.

All systems work in the car including the “Sapphire I” AM radio, fuel gauge, turn signals, exterior lights, high beams, wipers and horn. Because of the 6-volt system, the headlights are definitely not the brightest but I normally drive the car during the day.

The painted finish presents very nicely as you can see but it’s worn a bit thin in a few places on the front hood. There are a few nicks and scratches that I have tried to include in the photos. The bright trim on the car is in good shape but the front and rear bumpers are not as brilliant as they used to be. There is some pitting on the windshield and glass headlight covers. Please make sure you review them all and ask any questions before the auction is over. Included with the sale is the original owner’s manual, the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen certification materials and a file of records from service and restoration.

Re-live some old memories or make some new ones! Either way, this is the car to do it in!
