1992 VW Corrado SLC

About:This is a 1992 ½ Corrado SLC (i.e. it has a VR6). Some folks believe that the SLC started in 1993 but it was indeed in 1992, replacing the under-powered and troublesome four cylinder G60. It was called by some "the poor man's Porsche" when it came out. If I add all of what I've put into this car I'm sure I could have purchased a nice "real" Porsche by now.

The exterior of the SLC model does differ slightly from the G60 as well, primarily in the hood, grill and headlights.

One of the main differences between the ’92 and ’93 models being that the ‘92 SLC has the same interior as the G60 (and thus more parts area available for it). There were some cool things in the 1993+ like a better looking speedo and the center gauge console. I’ve modified the interior with a ’93 speedo and gauge cluster. Also, the 1992 VR6 uses a distributor and is OBD1 (or 1.5). The 1993 uses a coil pack.

I’ve had this car for over 15 yrs but have driven it very little lately and it is still under 100,000 miles. It had about 68K when I got it and began the modifications at about 80K. In the past couple of years I’ve driven it so little in fact, that it recently had to have a full valve job because a valve was getting stuck from lack of use. So, the car has a newly machined head, new valves, etc, and new distributor wires.

There is very little that remains stock on this car. So if you’re looking for an unmolested example to mod, this Corrado is not for you. However, if you appreciate all (or most) of what has gone into this car, you’ll love it.

It looks great from 15 ft away but on closer inspection you can see that it could use a new paint job, at least a decent respray. The clear coat is bubbling and/or peeling in many places and the clear coat on the Fiber Images hood is completely gone. I did take a couple of pictures with the hood wet and you can tell that it can look awesome with a new clear coat.

I can simply start to part it out and make a lot more from it but I’d rather it go to an enthusiast that will continue to improve upon it. Please, no low-ball offers. I will not sell parts separately! You can buy the whole package, and sell the extras for almost half as much as the price of the car itself. If you can't pick it up yourself, it is the buyer's responsibility to arrange for transport.

Performance: The car pulls strong all through the rev band, takes a lot of folks by surprise. You can even go deep into the redline if you wanted, since the rev limiter is removed with the GIAC chip. The suspension setup is awesome and it handles great. I used to have race springs on it but were way too stiff – these are just right. I took it to the big track at Willow Springs a while back and got it to about 125 mph on the front straight. I even managed to kick the rear end out coming down from the top of turn four. Not too shabby for a 25 yr old VW.

*Yes, this car does pass smog in California! As far as I know, none of the US-spec 1992 SLC models had a CEL (check engine light). Which was fine until about five years ago when California changed their stupid smog rules again and required that all cars have a CEL in order to pass smog. I procured and installed a Canadian spec module and now it passes with no problem.

Included Extras! If the car is shipped (as opposed to being picked up in person), I will only include what can fit inside the car (i.e. not the bumpers or hood). I've included the approximate value of the items, assuming you can even get them. I might have other stuff that I'll throw in as I find it.

  • ·New DDI side skirts and rear valence. I also have a front DDI (Dub Design Industries) bumper that was damaged before I even got to get it painted, should be a relatively easy fix since it is all fiberglass. ($700+ value on their website)

Issues: The car is 25 years old and it is not without issues. In the spirit of full disclosure, there are a handful of small things to take care of:

  • ·Needs new paint. Clear coat has seen better days.
  • Miscellaneous door dings, paint chips, etc.
  • ·Could use a front end alignment
  • ·Turn signal stalk switch needs cleaning/adjusting
  • ·Passenger side mirror motor does not work
  • ·Small bit of rust along a small part of the rear window (see pic)
  • ·Small ½ inch crack in windshield
  • ·Windshield wipers need to be adjusted; washer fluid bottle has been removed but will also be included.
  • ·If you want a heater, you’ll need to replace the heater core!I live in So. Cal. so I didn’t really need it.
  • ·Center VDO temp gauge is acting up, likely wiring
  • ·There is no radio or speakers but new speaker wire has been routed to all speaker locations.OEM harnesses remain untouched

Last car I sold, some moron decided to go a little crazy and ended up getting into an accident. Needless to say it was a huge mess. I know it may cost me some money in terms of a higher sale price but I can't afford to let that happen again. I hope you understand.
