1981 Toyota Land Cruiser
190,286 miles; Power steering and brakes; Hard Top; Carport kept; Runs great; Clear Title.
Bought off craigslist in July 2011 with 188,337 miles. Seller misrepresented it. He purchased it from a Colorado restoration shop in 2006. For my purchase, eller sent five (5) year old pics (from when he purchased) and never told me otherwise. I bought it over the phone and had it shipped. Since I am an extremely novice restorer, was looking for a “buy and drive” FJ and never realized it would be the project that it became. The main positive was, ther than some surface rust on frame, he vehicle was virtually rust free (one of previous owners rhino lined parts of frame and undercarriage). According to previous owner, olorado shop cut out and installed new front floor pans and rear quarter panels.
Since my ownership:
Mechanical: Replaced rear main oil seal, ngine oil pan gasket, ransfer case rear output shaft seal, joints and output shaft retainer seal; new alternator; replaced new insulator, eat riser, xhaust manifold ring/spring of exhaust manifold; gas filter; water pump and new belts (installed September 2012); Weber carburetor; removed smog pump, tc.; radiator flush, epair and paint; oil and filter changed (Fall 2014); replaced heater blower and resister (from MetricTlc); and replaced all water pump and radiator hoses.
Exterior: Treated frame surface rust with Ospho/Naval Jelly; removed front panels/hood and painted exterior (and interior of front and ambulance doors) in August 2014 in Medium Blue (Code 857) single stage acrylic enamel; when reassembling after paint, ll bolts replaced with stainless, ylon washers and rubber washers (no metal on metal); new side apron shim gaskets, iper motor cover gasket, iper blades, ntenna, lack hood and windshield latches, ood & cowl hinge gaskets, lack Euro side mirrors/gaskets; replaced passenger side wiper pivot; Best Jeep rear tub metal welting; new hard top rear driver side glass and passenger side pop out glass (April 2015); replaced rear side light gaskets, ear turn signal lenses and gaskets, ront turn signal lenses, ront door key hole gaskets; replaced front and rear leaf spring bumper stops; new parking brake cable (November 2014); windshield hood bumper pad; new rear exhaust cushion mount; aftermarket tailgate panel; refurbished add-on steering stabilizer with boot, askets and mounting brackets; trailer hitch; and sanded, reated rust with Naval Jelly, rimed and painted front and rear axles (while on vehicle).
Exterior Powder Coat (in black): Radiator fan shroud and brace poles; front splash guard (under radiator); gas tank straps and brush guard; rear turn signal splash guards; rear turn signal rock guards; bumperettes; rear license plate holder; thermostat housing (silver); battery tray; parking brake chassis brackets; running board stay brackets; transfer skid plate; front/rear splash guards; oil cooler pipe; alternator bracket; wiper fluid tub bracket; radiator heater pipe; hood stand; splash guard drivers side firewall; power steering splash guard; exhaust pipe bracket at rear; engine compartment hose brackets; heater blower hose and resister bracket; coil ignition bracket, dd-on steering stabilizer brackets and miscellaneous other parts (if I took it off, t was powder coated).
Interior: Purchased 1981 FJ40 seats and seat mount brackets; recovered front and jump seats in black (from MetricTlc); new rearview mirror; front door weather stripping (installed July 2015); new window channels (installed Aug 2015) and inner/outer felt (installed Aug 2015); interior door panels (molded plastic); driver’s side window regulator; new door stops (from MetricTlc); door pull handles; 4 speed transmission boot; transfer case boot; refurbished front and rear heaters (MetricTlc kits); replaced 4 Speed Direct Shift Glove Box plate; new dash magnum cluster bulbs; LED dash light (over radio housing); Rhino lined interior tub; new battery; new dashboard cushion; bolts removed were replaced with stainless bolt and nylon washer.
Interior Powder coat (in black): Jack holder; jack handle brackets; metal parts of front/console heaters; jump seats; and parking brake lever bracket.
Black bikini top and Haynes ’68 to ’82 manual included.
Weather Shield HD cover-http://www.autoanything.com/car-covers/60A3835A0A0.aspx available for an additional $300.00 (paid $528.00). Brand New, ever Opened Sony Marine DSX-MS60 Radio-https://docs.sony.com/release/specs/DSXMS60_mksp.pdf available for additional $130.00 (purchased, ut not installed).
In four (4) years, have put ~1,900 miles on it. I have put a ton of work into this vehicle and absolutely love it – lots of personal fulfillment. The only reason I am selling it is due to bad back that has recently gotten worse and the vehicle is too rough for me to enjoy anymore. I planned to change the shocks (instead painted them and add-on steering stabilizer), ut decided not to thinking a new owner may want to install a lift and/or new tires.
Note: Frame has some surface rust; when mechanic replaced intake manifold gaskets, e broke a bolt below carburetor (he didn’t claim it); and front hubs leak small amount of gear oil. All original parts removed and then replaced are included in sale. Two (2) small rust spots at bottom of passenger door (last photo).
Disclaimer: I am a 100% novice and have never restored a vehicle before. All mechanical, lectrical work, aint and tub Rhino lining was done by professionals. Pictures are of present condition of vehicle (with the exception of pic with hard top (nine (9) years old) – as top is off at this time, ut is included). I cannot attest to any work done by original restorer other than replacement of new front floor pans and rear quarter panels and frame/undercarriage rhino liner.
Vehicle is for sale locally, s well. Therefore, eller reserves the right to end auction at any time.
