This is an overhauled 1981 BJ40 diesel that I brought back with me from Costa Rica. Produced late 1980. VIN and frame # match. Very clean in and out. I am an experienced Cruiser mechanic with my first FJ40 being 20 years ago. I am not an importer or flipper. This one is a solid, good looking rig. Original vintage condition. I purchased it from a hotel owner who inherited it from his grandfather.
I've restored other 40s in the past and this one is a frame-on basic restore done partly in Rica and partly by myself. Paint is very nice satin mustard, single-stage. Body is very straight, aligned, and in proper order (unlike a great many South American cruisers). It's beautiful, eye-catching, and super fun, not to mention 25-30 miles a gallon. Everything is original except the spring conversion, shocks, alternator, soft top, hazard switch, and It is a perfect canvas truck for anyone wanting to deck a cruiser out with toys, add-ons, upgrades etc. 3.0L 4cyl B-engine gets around 25-30 miles a gallon. Very easy to work on---the engine can be pulled in two to three hours. Original 4sp manual. Has lots of crawling torque in 1st gear. Drives comfortably at 60mph. 4wd and hubs work great. This late model Cruiser is great for camping--- front seats can be quickly removed, opening up the whole floor for sleeping in and there is lots of head room!
Details
  • New rear main seal, hoses, air filter, belt, fan, valve cover seal, oil pan seal, oil filter, engine fires right up, runs excellent. Has brand new OEM rear main seal, properly seated with sealant.
  • Odometer is in kilometers. Rig probably has 75k miles total, and is recorded as such on the title.
  • I was told the engine was rebuilt ~7000 kilometers ago. Sounds awesome. Good compression, some raw fuel exhaust sometimes on cold starts, but exhaust is clean as a whistle afterwards. Injectors are in good working order. Crankcase pressure is not bad (oil cap does not blow off when sitting in place). Valves were inspected and good. Purrs like a diesel ought to.
  • Brand new upgraded/custom Isuzu 80-amp alternator+vacuum pump conversion provides much better, consistent voltage and charge. The alternator bracket and pulley were customized to take these readily available alternators and vacuum pumps. Original BJ40 alternators are only available from Australia or South America (and for $450 shipped!) which means if it goes bad here in the US, you're screwed.
  • Glow plugs heat in about 15 seconds. Glow plug indicator works properly. Will fire right up in freezing temperatures (so far tested to 30 degrees F). New oil change (Shell Rotella) and new coolant+distilled water was put in.
  • New clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing from fjparts.com, flushed and rebuilt clutch slave cylinder (new internal parts), clean fluid, new return spring, new clutch release fork dust boot installed.
  • Completely rebuilt parking brake with new shoes, springs, etc. Parking brake switch also rebuilt.
  • New brakes, lines flushed, new reservoirs, new clean fluid, Stops on a dime and straight.
  • Fuel tank and lines were overhauled - tank removed, cleaned and flushed, reconditioned, inspected, new primer pump, new fuel filter.
  • Rebuilt steering box, new rag joint, new seal, gear oil, steers properly, no play.
  • Drive train completely gone through, greased, new bolts, etc.
  • Rebuilt knuckles, new seals, etc.
  • Has rancho shocks with a front and rear coil spring conversion--much less jerky ride!
  • Electrical was overhauled and done right, new relays, grounds, wiring, loom, fuses, plugs, horns, lights, digital voltmeter and USB port, signals, switches, starter, gauge cluster, gauge bulbs.
  • LED illumination mod for gauge cluster so you can see them nicely in the dark. All gauges work except ammeter because it is not needed. Odometer is accurate.
  • Rebuilt wiper motor, new wiper blades. Wipers work, but could use a new wiper switch.
  • Newer custom soft-top, resealed the seams, custom fabricated half rear doors and half front doors, zipper windows. The doors for both the front and rear are original factory doors cut in half and nicely fabbed into half doors. Zipper windows on the front doors are easily removed for summer driving.
  • Upgraded to extra large 900 CCA battery.
  • New door and vent weatherstripping.
  • restored original 17" split rims with like-new vintage tires.
Everything works as it should, doesn't need anything. Some minor engine oil leakiness remains which still needs be tracked down. I've taken this camping in the rain and snow, no leaks or drips! Very fun! Cab, firewall, floor stays DRY in wet weather. New upholstery on all seats. Good paint, very rust free body and frame. No dents, no cracks, no bends, no bad scratches, no nada, good windshield with no chips. Includes original bottle jack and rods. New rear carpet and custom fabricated fold-up table for the bench seats. Sliding driver seat will accommodate taller people (old fj40 seats were tight for people over 6'). Comes with anti-theft pedal lock which locks both clutch and brake against the floor so they cannot be used.
Thousands have been invested. Have pictures and receipts to back up work done. One set of keys (ignition, fuel door lock, pedal lock). No heater, but has the windshield vents. Vintage Air heater for FJ40s with defrost ports runs $230 for the kit and is a very simple install. It is very reliable, fun to drive, no rattles or shakes. Clean Oregon title, new tags and plates.Call 503 724 9519 for inquiries.
