Description:

1985 Toyota SR5 Hilux 4x4 Straight Axle Rock Crawler

1985 SR5 REGULAR CAB LONGBED:Very rare and exceptionally nice Toyota Hilux 4x4. Made 1 year only. 1985 was the last year in North America that the Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck was produced with the straight front live axle and the very 1st year it was offered with the 22RE multi-port fuel injected engine. This one is especially rare because it's an SR5 edition with the 8 ft. long bed.
THE HILUX:Clean and 100% rust free. This classic Toyota runs & drives as good as it looks with absolutely zero mechanical issues. On their scale of 43 to 64 Experian rates it as a 57 which is unheard of for a truck going on 34 years old with 3 owners. Professionally rebuilt 22RE has less than 100 miles on it. Always lived in Tucson, Arizona where it's so dry that vehicles can't rust. Ice cold AC with new Denso compressor professionally converted to modern 134A freon. Power steering. Power disc brakes. Never been wrecked and mechanically restored to better than new. New 3 inch suspension lift with new shocks. 33" BFG All Terrain tires mounted on 15x10 Pro Comp rims. Clean Notarized Arizona "A" box title and many thousands in receipts documenting new parts & labor. Jump in this truck and drive it coast to coast feeling confident it needs nothing but gasoline. If you've ever wanted a really nice vintage Hilux the time to buy is when you see it.
22RE (2.4L) 4 CylinderLegendarily reliable 22RE runs like an industrial sewing machine.Starts every time with a click of key. No smoke, no knocks, no leaks, no issues whatsoever. Quiet. Strong oil pressure. Excellent throttle response. Runs cool, even on 112 degree Tucson summer days, thanks to the new uograded V6 aluminum radiator which is an inch taller and twice as thick as stock. Fresh professional engine rebuilt with polished crank, new rings and pistons, new standard rod & main bearings, new timing chain withmetal guides, new valve stem seals, refurbished cylinder head with 3 way valve grind, plus new seals and gaskets. A stainless steel header with 3/8" flange was added to complete the engine build. It's extremely peppy and makes a nice exhaust note. The exhaust has the factory catalytic converter and the stainless header system is 50 state legal. Here's a video (sorry for the quality) of a cold start:https://youtu.be/UOe0snws1hU
5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION & GEAR DRIVEN TRANSFER CASE:Factory 5 speed manual transmission shifts nice as you'd expect with a new clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and turned flywheel. A new input shaft seal and rear main crank seal means there's no leaks. The 4x4 engages smooth as designed. The 2 speed gear driven transfer case is the strongest humans have ever produced in this class of vehicle. Factory Aisin manual lockout hubs work like new.
SUSPENSION,WHEELS & TIRES:All of the steering rod ends, bushings and suspension components are new, along with longer front bump stops and drop drag link. There's no rattles, clunks or squeaks anywhere. The brakes are newer on all 4 corners. Stops quick. It's all extremely tight like a new truck with no wander or slop. 3 inch lift features new shocks, springs and shackles. (No blocks). The four 33x12.5x15 BFG All Terrain Radials with 3 ply sidewalls are older but have over 75% life left with no repairs or sidewall damage. They're mounted and balanced on 4 new 15x10 Pro Comp Street Lock simulated bead lock steel rims. There's an older 32 inch BFG spare on a 15x7 OEM steel rim stowed under the bed in the factory location with the original factory jack & tools included behind the bench seat. A new center carrier bearing was installed on the rear drive shaft and any u-joints with excessive play were replaced.
DIFFERENTIALS:Both factory differentials are stock with 4.10 gear ratio, open carriers and no leaks. All the gear oil is fresh.
INTERIOR:Exceptionally nice and clean for a 33 year old truck. Everything works as designed. The SR5 gauge cluster features tachometer, oil pressure gauge, temp gauge, voltimeter and fuel. The window regulators work smooth and there's even a factory sun roof. Odometer reads 233k. Under the dash carpet the original vinyl on the driver's side is pristine. The passenger side has some very minor heat cracking on the plastic surface. The factory radio was replaced with a Sony radio that includes a remote control but deck doesn't power up. We decided to leave the sound system up to the new owner. The original carpet is presentable. The heater blows 110 degrees hot. The factory AC blows 39 degrees cold and features a brand new OEM Denso compressor. The freon and fittings have been professionally converted to the modern 134A. The only noteworthy blemish in the interior is a small tear on the side of the passenger seat shown in the picture of the jack & tools stowed in their factory location behind the driver seat.
FRAME & BODY:
This truck has absolutely no rust, zero, none, except for maybe for some minor surface rust on the exhaust components. It's never been wrecked or even wheeled off road in any significant way. It features the rare 8 foot long bed which has been bedlined. The truck's had it's first exterior repaint recently. There's absolutely no filler. The sheet metal is all very straight for a 33 year old truck with a couple minor imperfections impossible to spot unless you're a couple feet away. The only obvious damage is on the very far right rear corner panel next to the bumper which wasn't fixed before painting as it would have required some filler.
INSURANCE:This truck is eligible for historic plates in any State. That also mean it's eligible for Collector Car insurance from outfits like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which costs only about $12 per month for a $10,000 full coverage policy. That's right. A stated $10k full coverage collector car insurance policy is only $12 per month and, get this, emissions are forever waived.
JUSTSO YOU KNOW:When you bid on eBay you're "entering a legally binding contract for sale". That's per the TOS (Terms of Service) agreement you accepted when becoming an eBay member. That means when you bid you need not only be truly committed but also have the funds in place and your wife's permission. It takes months of preparation to present a vehicle like this for public auction so please don't participate unless you're serious and have the means to follow through.
PAPERWORK:
Clean and clear notarized "A" box Arizona title is ready to go. Receipts documenting most all the important new parts & labor will be in a packet with the title along with a copy of the Experian Auto Check report. When last registered the previous owner lazily guessed at the mileage because he wasn't near the truck so the title says 250k instead of 233K.
INVESTMENT:Because of their exceptional engineering and reliability these Toyota Hilux pickups, especially the 22RE standard transmission 4x4 live axle trucks like this, only go up in value every year even while you drive them, providing one of the best investments in the automotive world today, bar none. Fact is there will never be another made like them. They're 1 off legends, as important as American Muscle cars, and are getting exceptionally hard to find in this condition. If not now then soon this truck will be a bargain at twice the price, especially considering this truck's ultra rare production status.
CONTACT:Email through eBay or Call 52O-Nine 77-O112 for any questions prior to clicking which is highly encouraged.
FEEDBACK:If you have ZERO feedback and are serious about this truckthen before bidding please be sure to call the number above so we can establish that you're not a squirrel. It won't take more than a couple minutes so please just do it or your bid will be cancelled. Unfortunately this is required due to the notorious reputation of eBay rookies for being impulsive non-paying bidders.
BUYER NOTE:For those new to eBay or nervous about buying a vehicle over the internet, that's understandable, but think about this for a moment. I've been selling vintage 4x4's and vintage parts on eBay for 18 years. Some 15 years ago I happened to sell a vintage Early Bronco to an eBay seller who runs a large scale pawn shop in Philadelphia with tens of thousands of feedbacks and he taught me this important eBay rule of thumb. Every positive feedback is worth about a dollar of trust. That means if you're buying something, say a special vintage carburetor for $300, then ideally the seller will have at least 300 positive feedbacks. This is just an ideal rule of thumb mind you. It's not etched in stone but rather a simple guideline or compass for action. So if there's somebody's selling a $10,000 vehicle with only 32 feedbacks I'd be leery. Doesn't mean it's not legit, it's just that there's not much track record. By contrast if a seller's asking $10k for a vehicle and has more than 12k positive feedbacks, then you can rest easier. While my feedback is rated 99.6%, I recently had a couple blemishes that I'd like to explain. A local Estate Sale recently advertised a 79 Plymouth with a rebuilt 360 (5.9L) engine that I acquired and listed. It sold and turned out to be a rebuilt 318 (5.2L) engine instead. It ran perfect and had receipts for the rebuild but the paperwork never mentioned the actual displacement and unfortunately I never checked. Since the guy who actually had it built passed away the family incorrectly presented it. That was ultimately my mistake for not checking the numbers on the block and I admit it. Next I stated that all the lights worked but it turned on the little side marker lights weren't hooked up. A simple fix but nevertheless a neglected detail. Although we worked it out, the buyer was understandably pissed about these 2 errors and left a negative even though he later admitted the rebuilt 318 ran exceptional and his high bid was about half what the truck was actually worth.
The 2nd blemish was a transmission that a repair shop owner in NY bought and the trucking company dropped it while in transit. They broke the bell housing and dented the oil pan but since the buyer had the bell housing and oil pan from the core tranny he made it all work and the end customer was fixed. But since the trucking company insurance claim took 90 days to settle I got the bad feedback from the shop owner who had to do a couple hours extra work swapping parts.
PAYMENT TERMS:A non-refundable deposit of $1000 either viaonline PayPal payment orcard over phone through Square is due within 24 hours of auction close.
Full balance of Payment is due within 72 hours of auction close by either direct bank to bank wire transfer, or you can overnight envelope a Cashiers Check, or pay cash in person. PayPal for the full balance is NOT an option, however a credit or debit card payment through Square.com is, so long as buyer is willing to pay the 3% fees.
Shipping:All shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer however we will always help your shipper coordinate the loading to the best of our ability. It all begins by calling the number above. Figure shipping any vehicle East of the Mississippi is about a grand. West is less. We will store the vehicle free for 21 days after sale. There is a $15 per day storage fee thereafter unless other arrangements are pre-dickered. Note that many naive buyers imagine they can jump on a plane to Tucson, pay in cash in person, and drive the truck home. In most cases that wrong. Not because the truck will have issues but rather because you won't get cheap airfare to Tucson, you won't have legal plates driving home, and the overall trip costs plus gas is way more than you think.
Inspection prior to bidding is welcome as vintage vehicles are always sold AS IS with no warranty.
