This Studebaker Lark Wagon has a interesting purpose and history! The car was first sold in a small town outside Colorado Springs in August, 1960. I do not know the owner history, but I was told I am the third owner. About 16 years ago I bought the car for my wife as a gift. I took the bus to Colorado Springs and drove it home to Southern California where I modified it. Using a (ten years old at that time) 1991 Chevy S10 Blazer as a donor, I gave the Lark the upgrades we were seeking: 4x4, power brakes, power steering, air conditioning and an automatic transmission. I also installed a hidden radio system for listening pleasure! It is an all weather car that has worked very well for its intended purpose. My wife and I have toured coast to coast, driven Route 66, traversed Mexico, Central America and Canada! All over New England, and wherever we go, people love seeing the car out on the road and give us a thumbs up! It's a real people pleasing ride!
I intend the following assessment to be honest and accurate, while hopefully not spoiling your interest in the car! The general overall condition is good. Overall, it is presentable, inside and out. The internal and external decorative chrome and dressing parts are intact and in good shape. The mechanical condition is good. The only thing I can relate regarding reliability is that the transmission leaks some oil when it sits for months and months, but is not a problem when it's used frequently. Tires are fair to good, but they are now 10 years old.
Here are some notes with a critical eye for detail: The interior door panels are slightly warped from moisture, the dash pad is cracking from sun exposure and the carpet is getting torn and thin in spots. I feel the floor padding was too thin and never very good either. About the exterior: The paint holds a good wax job and is presentable. The rear of the car has mild collision damage to the rear bumper and tailgate. This damage does not affect the tailgate operation. The fender quarter panels have small rust patches and bubbling. There are various scratches and dings. The exterior rubber parts are dry and cracking. The chassis paint is peeling in some areas. Like any old car built 55 years ago, it has leaks in the rain and it rattles over rough roads.
We live in Central America, and for the past decade have stored the car inMassachusettsfor use during our annual summer visits. We drive this car daily from the day we arrive to the day we put it away. During this past 16 years, our children have grown quite a bit and the Lark now gets filled to the brim with our gear. We want to expand our exploration and go camping all over the US. Our plan is to sell the Lark and look for a full size 4 door pick up with camper shell.
I could go on and on about the details of the construction, the trips we have taken and the places we have seen. The accident that caused the damage in the rear is a great story about getting caught in an election day parade in El Salvador! The car has sported over the years the license plates of: Colorado, California, Costa Rica and now Massachusetts!
