1971 Porsche 911 911E Targa

After a great deal of thought and reluctance, I have decided to sell a small portion of my car collection. I have had a great passion and love for cars since the 60's, and have spent most my life collecting them. The ambition and means isn't the problem, it's the indoor space. I have managed to fill a 6600sqft warehouse with my collection and several garages, but even with stacking cars I am out of space. I still have a few cars to obtain before they become too far out of reach, so I must do it now. Every car I have ever owned must have a pulse, heartbeat, soul and story or I would not want it. This car is no different.

I was attending a private event at The California Club in Los Angeles when I heard someone say "that's not the way it happened”.It was a very old and dear friend of mine that I hadn't seen in years. I responded by saying "are you still on tour and singing off key”? He replied "are you still stealing other guys girls and smashing their cars”? To this I replied "that's not the way it happened”. The night was filled with back a forth jabs at each other, but before he left he asked me if I was still collecting cars. With a nod of my head I replied, Yep. He said he had an old musician buddy of his that was going to be selling his Porsche. He told me he would give the owner my number, if Jay didn't buy it yet. He laughed, we hugged and he went on his way. True to his word my phone rang before noon the next day. It was a representative for the owner asking when I would like to see the car. A few days later I was on my way to Toluca Lake meeting up with the representative I had talked to over the phone and the owner Roy. As I walked down the long driveway towards the stables I could see the car had been backed out of the garage and positioned in front of some beautiful horses. I was kind of in shock because I didn't know equestrian properties existed in this neighborhood. As I started to look the car over, Roy started asking me questions like I was being interrogated. Apparently I had answered all the questions correct because he asked me if I wanted to take it for a ride. As we drove around this quaint little area that was once the home to most of Hollywood (Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ozzie and Harriet, Betty Davis and the list goes on) he told me all about his wife, his life and this car. He said the car is not mine; it's my wife's car. She's not with us anymore; I was robbed of her many years ago. I'm not sure if she loved this car or me more. Then with a tear in his eyes he said, maybe her horses. Either way I had enough love for the two of us... she was my everything! I wasn't born a rich man, but I sure could play music and wasn't afraid of hard work and wasn't a quitter. My sweet girl married a poor dreamer that promised her the world. It was her belief in me that made everything happen. In the late 60's and early 70's I was fortunate enough to get some studio work on a few albums. Now day's people refer to guys like me as part of The Wrecking Crew. With the money I was making I was able to buy this and many more properties around the Valley. Then in the mid to end 70's a crazy little movie came out called The Gumball Rally. It featured two sexy girls driving a black Porsche Targa coast to coast. After we saw that movie all she would talk about is that car. I told you she was my everything, so what else could I do but get her that car. I went to the local Porsche dealership just to find out that it was an earlier model so I couldn't buy it new. After a quick search I found this car locally and in pristine condition so I bought it. Over the next few years we and made a few changes to make the car more comfortable for my sweet wife. The two front seats were changed for some more current Porsche seats to help support my wife's lower back. The original ignition and intake was changed to make the car run smoother for daily driving (I still have all the original parts in the garage that go with the car). I did have the motor rebuilt because it was starting to drip oil and I have all the paperwork. Not long after the motor was done my wife took sick and then passed. Since then the car was sparsely driven, but started all the time so the engine wouldn't go bad. The motor had very few miles on it when we parked it. I don't know if she drove it every day, but I know she did sit in it. It has taken me a long time to part with the car so I want to make sure it goes to the right person. I would like to see the car loved and put back into a condition my wife would have liked. I told Roy if he sold the car to me I would bring the car back to the glorious days of when his wife first got her little baby. Being a man of my word, this is what I did.

The minute the car was mine, I filled it with gas and drove about 300 up the California coast enjoying the scenery and making a game plan for the car. My first stop was my local Porsche mechanic to fix whatever he thought the car would need to make it the perfect daily driver if that was the route I was going to take with the car. We ended up going a little over board in this, but the outcome was worth it. The relatively fresh motor was once again given a handful of fresh seals and parts to make sure it would live for another lifetime. The hardest decision I had to make was if I should put the factory ignition and intake back on the car, or keep it in this configuration. I wanted the car drivable so I didn't change it back to factory. I do have all the rare stock ignition and intake in original condition that will do with the car. I can be converted back to factory with very little work and no real expense. The next stop on the journey was to the body shop for a fresh coat of the original black paint to give fresh luster to this sleeping beauty. The paint work was done at Sherman Oaks auto body, the same shop that works on all the highline cars all over the city. After the color sand and buff we only had two more stops. The next one was to my favorite upholstery shop to get a complete new interior including Targa top. This is where I decided to step up my game and make a statement. I had the entire interior done in a 1970's hip period correct plaid. This might have turned out to be one of my greatest decisions ever. To tell you how beautiful I think the interior turned out would be an understatement. Everyone who has seen it just falls in love! The final stop was to have the car detailed to make it shine top to bottom like the day it left the factory...maybe better. I have loved cars since I was a little boy, but the one thing I love more is seeing people happy. The entire time I was having work done to the car I was just thinking how happy Roy will be when he get to see it again. The last little touch of closure to a man's love and life.

This is a perfect car for a collector, weekend driver and occasional car show, or daily driver. I know what I have, but I am very reasonable on what I will be selling the car for. I have set my reserve at a very low price to make sure the car sells.

If you would like to see the car or have additional questions, you can reach me at 1-818-802-7374. I'm better on the phone then with emails and text messages. I'm that old dinosaur of a guy when it comes to modern technology.

Thanks and good luck.
