1979 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

Silver Metallic with Black Leather Interior

25,850 Miles & Three Owners from New

This Porsche 911 Turbo coupe (September 1979 production date) was sold new by Valley Porsche Audi in Spokane, Washington on January 31,1980 to Walter Balinski Jr. of Goleta CA. Mr. Balinski, a mechanical engineer, drove the car approximately 13,000 miles until 1990 when he sold the car to the second owner in Santa Barbara, California. The second owner drove the car just over 1,000 miles until November 1998, when his brother, the current owner, bought it. After owning this 911 Turbo for 20 years, the current owner has purchased a Packard convertible and is ready to sell this Turbo to its next caretaker.

The car has been garage-kept and well-maintained by its three owners since new. It has all its documentation and accessories such as the original sales brochure, color chart, window sticker, Certificate of Authenticity, owners manuals, maintenance and warranty books, burgundy envelope, radio documents, keys and key pouch, service history from new, tool kit, air compressor, jack, spare and tire changing gloves. This is an amazingly complete car with all the original details and documents.

The car presents beautifully for a 38 year old car. The paint is excellent showing normal stone chips and minor wear consistent with just under 26,000 miles of driving. The panel gaps and fit are excellent. The interior finishes are original and exceptional, showing virtually no wear, e.g., the driver’s seat bolster shows no visible wear and the leather dash pad is not warped.

The car retains all its original details such as the thermal reactors on the exhaust system, the radio and Hirschmann antenna, the original protective floor mats, the Fuchs wheels with the original anodized finish, etc. - all there as delivered in 1979. The only modification to the car is a Clarion equalizer mounted under the dash which was installed decades ago and still enhances the sound of the original radio.

In addition to regular, routine maintenance such as oil changes and filters, previous services include a recent new clutch assembly and engine-out major service in January 2017 - about 500 miles ago — which included ignition wires, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor & rotor, ignition coil, oil tank sending unit, air & fuel filters, oil & filter, engine insulation pad, various oil lines, transaxle oil, valve adjustment, and more, Michelin Pilot Sport tires, main heater blower, battery, hood struts, A/C compressor, R134A conversion (original compressor included), A/C receiver/dryer, top end reseal, head studs, turbocharger rebuild and rear wheel bearings.

As first-generation 911 Turbos gain popularity with Porsche collectors, well-maintained, highly original examples have become increasingly difficult to find.

This is a rare opportunity to purchase an early Porsche 911 Turbo with:

  • Desirable and classic silver and black, low mileage and highly original,
  • Three owners (two in California), current owner for past 18 years,
  • Window sticker, books, tools, service records, etc.

A lesser example (i.e., less original, modified, fewer service records, undocumented mileage) recently sold on Bring a Trailer for a final bid $156,000 and including the buyers premium, an ending price of $161,000. This is a superior example for over $10,000 less.

The Hagerty price guide places the following values on the 1979 911 Turbo:

About the 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo:

Type 930. 300 bhp, 3,299 cc air-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with a single turbocharger and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, four-speed manual transmission, front and rear independent suspension, and four-wheel power disc brakes. Wheelbase: 89.4 in.

In the company’s earliest days, Porsche was known for producing lightweight cars with exceptional handling characteristics. This formula kept Porsche very competitive on race tracks and in showrooms around the world until 1976, when the 911 Turbo was introduced.

Porsche had experimented with turbocharging it’s racing cars, most notably with the 917/30, but the Type 930 Turbo was the first road going Porsche to utilize forced induction. The early 930 also had many low volume racing pieces due to the lower volume of cars produced such as full floating front rotors, different brake calipers, different turbo oil pump on the left camshaft, etc. The 930 Turbo retained the classic looks of the 911 that enthusiasts had come to know and love, yet it was defined by its unique “whale tail” spoiler, which helped to keep the rear tires planted on the pavement at high speeds. The 911 Turbo boasted a top speed of just over 155 mph, making it one of the fastest cars of its day. Car and Driver magazine recorded a 0–60 sprint in just 4.9 seconds, which is a time that could easily beat most cars produced today.
