In the days before automobiles, D'Ieteren was a famous coach builder in Brussels, Belgium. In 1961, the company teamed up with Porsche to begin producing coachwork for 356 roadsters. The T6 version of the 356 was identified by its twin grilles, squared hood and outside filler cap, improved ZF gearboxes with special gearing just for the roadster and shift linkages for the 4-speed manual transmission, improved brakes and stronger connecting rods.
With just 249 examples of the twin-grille roadsters, Chassis No. 89748 is a precious rare car, but other elements make it even more desirable original color Oslo blue on Red, and unique set of factory options. It was purchased new in the Pacific NW in 1962, and a WA State car since. In 1975 a Porsche Club of America member purchase the car in Tacoma WA and took it home to Yakima, Washington, He purchase the car then for $4,000 with 50,000 actual miles on the odometer. During his ownership, he liked to tinker with his cars, especially this one; he painted the car red in his garage, and change the trim to black. and at some point installed the S90 motor and 5,500 rpm tachometer, and a 90 badge. He drove it sparingly over the years, accumulating only a few hundred miles before his health began failing. The car sat in his storage, along with his other forgotten cars, until they were discovered in early 2017 after he passed away.
The car has a Washington-state title with mileage authentication from its purchase in 1975.
This rare Porsche 356B T6 Roadster might very well be the hidden jewel of his collection.
