In 1983, Sir David Richards of Prodrive with Rothman as a title sponsor, approached Porsche to build a competitive rally 911 to meet Group 4 and Group B requirements.Porsche exploited loop holes in the regulations and built 20 examples.All were delivered from the factory in white to privateers while 6 went to the Rothman’s team.Built off of the Turbo chassis, they were incredibly strong while easily shedding over 600lbs of weight from the stock model.They had a specially designed rally suspension and 930 brakes. Power came from a 3.0L RS motor that produced 255hp.These were potent weapons in rallies across Europe and Africa.They dominated most of their competition.
This project was the brain child of highly respected metal and paint expert John Esposito.Esposito has been restoring Porsches for the last 4-decades and has become revered for his expert metal work in creating some of the best sport-purpose 911s.At the end of 2012, a close friend had a donor chassis that peaked his interest for a build he had been contemplating for a long time…a 911 SCRS.The chassis was a 1975 model year, which was perfect since it would be exempt from all California smog regulations.After building countless hotrods and backdated cars for clients, Esposito wanted to build something that was unique, paid tribute to an important car to Porsche’s race history, and that he could drive to work every day.It also had to be versatile enough to have fun on local backgrounds, comfortable on long distant drives, and reliable for daily SoCal traffic commuting.
Nearly 1,500 man-hours was invested on this endeavor.Remarkably, the entire project was completed within the span of a calendar year.The first step was to take the donor chassis and completely restore it.He personally addressed all the metal work himself.He repaired any and all rust as well as butt-welding the factory steel turbo flares.Furthermore, he strengthened the chassis similar to the original cars by replacing the stock torsion tubes with turbo ones (a very big job).He hand-modified the fiberglass bumpers to replicate exactly how the factory examples looked.In fact, his fit was even better.Once all the metal work was completed, it was dissembled and prepped for paint with a primer coat.Then, the car was reassembled to further perfect panel fitment and block sand the body one more time before paint was applied.Once again, the body was dissembled painted in the correct factory 908 white and reassembled.As a result, the body gaps are truly superb.The car was then put on a rotisserie and undercoated with Wurth SKS and then painted throughout the inside and bottom (see pics).
After the bodywork was completed, the car rolled across the shared alley to TLG Auto for mechanical assembly.TLG is one of the top independent Porsche repair specialists in Southern California.They specialize in air-cooled cars and have been responsible for some of the most respected builds across the country.The late Tony Gerace, founder of TLG, performed most of the work for Esposito.He was a true maestro.A 964 3.6L engine was sourced and was found to be in very good condition.So, it was cleaned up, modified for additional oil cooling and installed with a rebuilt 915 gearbox.Besides all the wiring, TLG plumbed and installed a completely new heat (SSI stainless steel heat exchangers) and upgraded air-conditioning system.Power windows were also installed.An Elephant Racing dual Carrera oil cooler system with remote electric fan was also installed.They installed a complete new turbo suspension kit and 930 brakes.
Then, George of Levon Upholstery went to work installing a new interior which included the following:
Dual layer of Dynamat and Acumat sound deadening throughout interior
Custom upholstered Recaro sport seats (articulating) in RS fabric with large houndstooth inserts
New dash with a/c vents
Factory grey velour carpet including trunk
Rear seat delete/speaker box (removable with carpet finished underneath-see pic)
New stock door panels
Pop-out rear windows
The final steps of installing all the trim and glass was performed by Esposito.He also included correct detail items like the original style side mirror, bumper reflectors, and license plate lights.
The end result was a masterpiece.He captured the true visual essence and bones of a real 911 SC/RS while also making it completely user friendly and easy to drive.It’s almost what you would expect the factory to make if they produced more “street-legal” versions.
Within the last 6-months and after 38k miles of use, during a routine service, a leakdown test was performed and one cylinder was low.So, the motor was rebuilt and upgraded to increase power and reliability.Highlights of the recent work include:
New crank (polished and magnafluxed)
Replace main bearings and resurface connecting rods
Sent heads and valves out to Ollies for refinishing/modifying
3-angle valve job
Installed 993 Supersport cams by John Doughtery
993 head studs
Replaced exhaust side rocker arms and resurface rest
Steve Wong chip
Powdercoat engine tins and manifold
Gold zinc replate of all hardware
New timing chains, guide rails, and gaskets (all Porsche parts)
Furthermore, SSI stainless heat exchangers, new limited slip differential, and custom Monty exhaust system were installed.
Estimated output is now at 300hp.Esposito quickly put 850 miles on the new motor and within the last 30-days performed a break-in oil service as well as valve adjustment.Everything was inspected and in excellent condition.
For the last 4-years, Esposito has been driving this car every day to work and averaging nearly 10k-miles per year.He displays it at local concours events as well as driving it on 1,000+ mile journeys to annual R Gruppe Treffen events.
Even though this 911 has been driven and enjoyed, it was never tracked or abused.As a result, it’s still in excellent condition.The paint is crisp and has minimal signs of use.There are a few minor chips on the front nose and rear flares that have been professionally touched-up.The custom made deep 16x8 and 16x9 Fuchs have a nice anodized finish lip with painted centers and are wrapped in Fresh Toyo tires with near full tread.The brakes have around 75%-life remaining.
The interior is equally as nice and looks very fresh.The seats have no signs of wear.The headliner, door panels, carpet, and dash all look perfect and new.All the restored gauges work properly including the clock.The Bluetooth radio sounds great and is a nice edition for longer drives.The A/C system has recently been serviced, checked for leaks, and recharged. It blows ice cold.Plus, you can run the A/C in extremely hot weather thanks to the larger oil cooling system with auxiliary fan.
This Porsche is truly wonderful to drive and is probably one of my all-time favorites.It’s the perfect blend of livable attitude.The car starts easily with one crank of the key and holds a smooth idle.The power is intoxicating and effortless.Gobs of torque pin you to your seat while still being quite easy to modulate the power.The gearbox shifts great with no grinding or slipping.The big 930 brakes have tons of stopping power, but they are not power assisted and will require some extra effort.However, once you get used to it, the brake pedal has the perfect feel.The handling is spot on.It inspires confidence as turn in is incredibly responsive while it also tracks straight down the road.The suspension is compliant enough to soak up the local roads while also providing enough feedback for more spirited driving.Finally, the sound is fantastic.It has a purposeful growl to the exhaust that isn’t droning and still allows you to hear the motor howl at higher RPMs.
This bespoke built 911 would easily be at home on your local concours lawn and forP daily use as well as vintage touring events.
California registration is current through July of 2018.
