The S2 was the final iteration of Porsche’s 944 model. It was the largest displacement and most powerful normally aspirated example. It’s 3.0L engine was the largest 4-cylider engine produced in the world. This dual overhead cam/16-valve engine produced 211hp. The braking and suspension package coupled with nearly perfect weight balance made these cars wonderful for spirited drives. The challenge is many of these did not survive the test of time. Furthermore, the 3.0L engine 944s were only built for a few years and production was limited.
This S2 was built in January of 1989 and sold new by the Porsche dealer Mark Motors of Ottawa, Canada on March 28th, 1989. It was special ordered with the following options:
Heated seats (left and right)
Limited slip differential
Sport seat left with electric height adjustment
Automatic speed control
Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
The first owner was Peter Wilson of Ontario Canada. It appears he took this 944 back to the selling dealer at least once a year for service. There are dealer stamps in the book up to around 60,000-miles. Then, another local Ontario resident, Alan Greenberg, purchased the car in 2000 with around 62,000-miles. He continued the same maintenance regiment for the next 15-years all at his local Porsche dealer. Highlights of his services included:
Annual oil services
Water pump, timing belt, balance belt (@ 76k-miles)
Cruise control servo and module
Rear wiper motor
Finally, last year, he sold the car to a U.S. enthusiast who legally brought the car into the States and got documentation from Porsche that it was emission compliant (see pic). It was then shipped to the current owner here in Southern California where it passed California’s strict smog test and is currently licensed and registered in California. Upon receiving the car, this owner/collector immediately took it to his Porsche specialist to have it checked over and any services it needed performed. This included:
New Continental Extreme Contact tires
Water pump inspected (was new)
Replaced timing belt and balancing belt
New motor mounts
Oil service/top off fluids/minor service
New front brake pads (rears are at 75%)
In total over $2,500 was recently invested making sure this 944 is ready for use.
The condition of this 944 is excellent and very original. I would classify this as a high level survivor/driver. The paint looks great and is mostly original (verified with a paint meter) except the right rear quarter panel. Visually, you cannot tell a difference. There are light signs of use to be expected on a car of this age/miles. We had some of the nicks professionally touched-up, but there are others (see pics). Pretty typical for a 27-year old/100k-mile Porsche. The wheels have some minor curb rash (see pics) and are wearing new Continental tires. The front brakes have fresh pads (rotors are worn and will need to be replaced on next set of front pads) and the rears have about 75% life remaining with good rotors. All the glass is original including the windscreen, which has a chip by the passenger side (see pic). It has been professionally repaired. The original clear plastic factory fender protectors are showing age as well (see pics). The underside of the car is very dry and original. It certainly tells the story of how well cared-for the car was. There are no signs of damage or rot. Some of the hardware has surface corrosion on it, but that’s about it. Even original Cosmoline is still evident.
The interior looks amazing and is mostly original. The seats show minimal wear and the original factory tartan inserts are in excellent shape. The carpets, headliner, dash, and door panels look perfect. All the gauges function properly. The A/C has just been recharged and blows ice cold. The sunroof works great as does the later-style radio. All the lights function properly as well.
This 944 is a wonderful driving example and evident that it has never been abused. The power feels great with excellent low-end torque. The brakes are responsive and steering is very tight. There are no squeaks or rattles. This Porsche feels very solid and would be great for either daily use or long weekend tours.
This Porsche comes with the owner’s manuals/books, tool kit, spare, jack, cargo cover, and lots of records/notes.
