With the launch of the Carrera G-series model in 1984 came one of the final iterations of Porsche’s longest running 911 designs. Improvements to reliability, power, and fuel efficiency received rave reviews at the time. 30-years later, the success of the Carrera program has been widely recognized. These cars have quickly become the top choice among enthusiasts and collectors. Due to their legendary reliability, many examples have been simply driven into the ground. Or, on the other end of the spectrum are the low mile garage queens that rarely see the light of day. As a result, they may look pretty, but are either in need of neglected service and/or are too nice to actually enjoy. The key is to find that balance of nice survivor that is fun to drive without breaking the bank. This example is just that.
This Carrera was built in March of 1994. Although we do not know much about the car’s early history, it lived in the Southwest since at least 1999 and probably since new. It also had the same owner until earlier last year when the current owner purchased it through a local dealer. Since purchasing the car, the current owner had minor services performed by well-respected shops such as Benton Performance. A couple oil changes were done as well as installing a new catalytic converter to pass California’s strict smog test (which it does). A new O2 sensor and fuel cap were installed. Finally, both horns were replaced.
Although the car has proven to be very reliable for the past year/5k-miles, the owner had an opportunity to buy an early long hood 911 that he couldn’t pass up. So, he has asked us to find a new home for this Carrera. Upon getting the car, we took it to our local Porsche specialist and had them look it over. They said that the car was very dry and straight with no signs of major accident damage or rust repair. It looked like a lightly used example that was frequently serviced. The bottom of the car is very dry with no leaks. Furthermore, they performed a compression test and the results were outstanding: 1) 175 2) 174 3) 170 4) 177 5) 180 6) 178. They also checked the a/c system, which had not been converted and is still R12 (this is a good thing as R12 is available, blows colder, less likely to leak, and the system is designed for it). The system was recharged and new Schrader valves were installed. It blows cold with no evidence of leaking. They did note that the blower motor in the trunk over the condenser has a chunk of plastic missing (see pic) probably due to the oversized Interstate battery being installed. Ultimately, for cold a/c while in traffic, this should be repaired and the part is available. The deck lid shocks are weak and the contacts on the high/low beam switch are bad.
From a driving perspective, this Carrera drives great. It starts easily, idles even, and has strong acceleration. The steering is tight and the car shifts easily with no clutch slip or gear grind. The brakes have around half-life remaining and excellent pedal feel.
This Carrera looks very nice. The color combination is unusual and quite striking. It is a refreshing alternative to the normal red, black, and white ones usually available. The paint shines up well. It was repainted some time ago (roof is still original paint). There are light signs of use (normal small nicks/chips on front). The original factory Fuch wheels (16x6 and 16x7) are wearing older tires that have tread, but will need to be replaced (3 are Yokohamas and 1 is a new Hankook). Upon purchasing the car last year, the current owner found factory Carrera rear and front spoilers and had them installed. They look great and stock. The original flat deck lid is included with the car (see pic).
The interior is equally as nice. It appears the front seats have been recovered in correct factory leather. There are not tears, cracks, or rips. The carpet is original and in good shape. The original beige gray headliner (rare) looks great with no tears. It appears the sun visors have been replaced with newer black ones. The dash has no cracks or warping and is sporting a Momo Prototipo steering wheel. The door panels are in very good shape with minimal warping to the door pocket covers/arm rests. The gauges all work properly except the clock. Also, the original Blaupunkt Tuscson radio does not work. The a/c blows cold.
California registration paid through April of 2017.
This Porsche includes the original owner’s manual, recent service receipts, jack, space saver spare, and original deck lid (buyer responsible for shipping/pick up).
