Porsche's initial work with turbocharged racing cars in the 1960s led to a turbocharged version of the 911, though it was originally intended for racing, the market demanded that Porsche produce road-going versions. Suspension refinements, larger brakes and a strengthened four-speed gearbox rounded out the package, which included a functional "whale-tail" rear spoiler, wider rear wheels, upgraded tires, and flared rear wheel wells. Simply called the "Turbo", it was released in 1975 with export to the U.S. starting in 1976. The 930 (internal designation) proved fast but demanding; however, skilled drivers quickly learned how to drive it properly and beyond the limits of most other sports cars.
Completed in October of 1979, this non-catalyst 1979 Turbo was produced for the North American market, equipped with electric sliding sunroof, limited slip differential, electric mirrors, sport seats and air conditioning among other of the 930's luxuries. The Turbo wears its factory original Black (A1) paint over Cork (88) Leather upholstery, while retaining all identification decals, plating, finishes, trim and accessories. The interior's upholstery remains unmodified and very tidy with Blaupunkt CR radio, with 1979 owner's manual residing in the glove box. Alloy wheels and correct exhaust remain fitted, as both front and rear compartments reflect the overall originality of the vehicle, including its immaculate undercarriage. The luggage bay is equipped with correct date coded spare, along with factory tool roll, jack and fitted Porsche car cover.
The 930 performs well, thanks to years of thoughtful maintenance and care, with accompanying records from the early 1990's to present. As Porsche's opposition to the big Italians, the highly coveted 930 Turbo is a sports car legend of its era and continually revered in decades following. Thoroughly detailed from top to bottom here is an outstanding example for those seeking an honest, original and final-year U.S. spec first-run model - ideal for continued collectability and enjoyment.
