Description:

1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

We recently discovered this survivor Third-Gen Firebird in sleepy upstate New York. It had spent most of it's life with one owner, until changing hands a few times locally after death and divorce. We rescued it from the third verifiable owner, who didn't know a Firebird from an ostrich...
She and her husband took delivery of the car in lieu of cash to settle an outstanding debt, and parked it outside under a tree in their yard for a better part of a year. Had we not discovered it when we did, they probably would have started driving it...in the dead of winter!
All-in-all, with less than 25k original miles on the clock, it's an outstanding example of a VERY clean and unmolested Third Gen Firebird, a black WS6 car to boot, fully-loaded with every option, including the optional rear differential (G92), rear disk brakes (J65), T-tops (CC1), and hood bird delete.
Here are some more details, as follows:
ENGINE/POWER TRAIN: Pontiac only offered the 5.0L 305 TPI in 1986 as their top-of-the-line engine - the 5.7L TPI didn't arrive until 1987 - so this car represents the peak of Third-Gen Firebird performance for 1986. The engine in this car is completely OEM stock-original, with the exception of a fresh cap/rotor and oil/coolant change. It retains all of its original date-stamped hoses and plug wires.
The engine compartment is very clean; we installed a new OEM repro hood insulation blanket from Hawks Third Gen Performance.
The engine starts, runs, and idles like new, with no noise or smoke. The transmission shifts well.
No fluid leaks of any kind.
We replaced the fuel filter.
The AC functions as normal and blows cold.
CHASSIS/SUSPENSION/BRAKES/EXHAUST: the car retains all of its original (and optional) WS6 performance suspension/drive train components - MacPherson struts/shocks, stabilizer bars, 16x8 Hi-Tech aluminum wheels - and they're in excellent shape; the clear coat on some of the wheels is discolored, which was typical.
The WS6 package included choice of an optional limited-slip 3.27 rear differential (G92), which this car has.
The undercarriage is very clean and free of rust.
We replaced the front brake hoses, rotors, pads, and calipers/rear pads with a brand new Power Stop KC142 parts kit; the originals are included with the sale.
The original exhaust was solid and intact, but succumbed to the inside-out rust holes at the bends like most of them do; we installed a brand new Flowmaster cat-back exhaust system.
BODY/PAINT: very clean and straight sheet metal wearing it's original black paint; there is one noticeable scratch in the driver's side A-pillar which only shows under led/florescent light, and not well in photos.
A couple of small pings in the hood, and a few pencil eraser-sized sap stains from the time the car spent outside under a tree.
Some mild spider-webbing on front fascia behind the license plate frame.
Doors do not sag and close nicely.
The T-Tops panels are in excellent shape, as are the seals, which do not leak.
The rear deck-lid spoiler - which was vinyl-coated metal on these cars - suffers from the cracking that almost all of them experienced (which is why Pontiac later switched to fiberglass). There are two spots that have been repaired with 3M weatherstrip adhesive (see photos). OEM replacements in good shape are like unicorns, and while switching to a fiberglass replacement is an option, I preferred to keep the car as original as possible.
INTERIOR: with the exception of a new OEM repro headliner from Hawks Third Gen Performance, everything is OEM stock-original and functions as normal, including stock stereo and speakers, which sound great.
Dash, upholstery, and carpets are excellent throughout.
There are small - and typical - plastic stress cracks in the top front corners of each door panel.
There's also a small cigarette burn - people still smoked in the '80's - in the lower front part of the driver's seat (see photos).
TRANSFER/SHIPPING: I have the clean NY title, but the car will officially transfer on a VT DMV Bill of Sale, as VT does not (re)title cars older than 15 yrs.
I will deliver via enclosed transport to within 200 miles of 05149 for a flat fee of $500, and/or assist buyer with shipping.
