Are you looking for 1974 Super Duty SD 455 Trans Am Project? This is it... a local barn find genuine 1974 Pontiac Trans Am that came from the factory with an X Code 455 Super Duty engine. This has been stored in a barn for years. Please review all photos and item description before bidding.

This classic muscle car spent much of its life stored in Florida and then in Illinois. It is in need of a complete restoration as you can see. Please scroll down and enjoy the 100+ photos. If you cannot view all the photos, please click here.

The original muscle car era is usually thought to end in 1974, but as many of you know, the muscle car era ran as late as 1974 because of the Pontiac Trans Am with the legendary 455 Super Duty V8.

The 1973-1974 SD-455 is basically a race engine on par with the 454 LS-6. The Super Duty’s block was reinforced for greater rigidity and was a 4-bolt main motor. The connecting rods were made of forged steel, and were heat-treated for greater strength. They were teamed with forged aluminum TRW pistons, with 8.4:1 compression ratio.

The round-port cylinder heads maximized airflow, and featured an 800 cfm Quadrajet carburetor and cast iron, header-style exhaust manifolds. The engine used a high-pressure oil pump, and provisions for dry-sump oiling were cast into the block. The 455 Super Duty engines were hand-assembled to keep tolerances tight. The 1974 SD-455 was rated at 290 net horsepower and 395 ft/lbs of torque and as many know, were under rated.

Only 943 Firebird Trans Ams were built with the engine in 1974. This is an original Buccaneer Red Trans Am example. The SD-455 engine was retired after the 1974 model run. The 1974 SD-455 Trans Am is a milestone car that was an end of an era.

Condition Report:

This vehicle has been stored for years. It needs to be disassembled and restored and is not for the faint of heart. It includes a clear title in the owner's name, as well as the data plate and even the original door sticker. The VIN number has been unmolested and still under the windshield as shown.

While it appears fairly complete and original, it needs to be completely restored and is missing the engine. The 455 SD engine 490132 casting is very difficult to find but if you have one, this is the car for you. Or, restore the car and wait for an engine to appear on eBay or at a swap meet. They do show up from time to time. We do have the original valve covers and completely rebuilt correct carburetor as shown.

The interior is fairly complete but shows wear and needs a good cleaning as well. There is no broken glass and and the trim is also all there. It also has the original AM FM radio and 2 sets of seats are included. We believe the silver set is for a 1981 pace car. It should probably have a new set of door panels and a dash pad. Two sets of gauges are included as shown.

The floor pans and rocker panels are excellent as you can see. Unfortunately the trunk leaked and damaged the trunk pan and rear frame rails. Included in the sale are two nice doors and front fenders. The hood and trunk lid can be used. It could use a set of rocker panel patch panels. Note the blended flares. We are including a set of used OEM flares and a number of OEM shakers. The shifter and interior trim is also present, as well as the transmission and drive shaft. All the extra parts are included in the sale.

The buyer is responsible for transportation and any loading issues and securing the vehicle and parts at the time of pickup.

To summarize, it is our opinion that this vintage 1974 Pontiac SD 455 Trans Am would be a very nice addition to anyone's collection but needs a complete restoration, is missing the engine and is being sold as-is-where-is. This rare find would make a great project for the Pontiac T/A enthusiast, father and son or weekend mechanic. They are selling from $70,000-125,000 restored and well worth the restoration investment in our opinion.
