Description:

1976 Pontiac Le Mans

The car was purchased originally here in the Chicago suburbs (Oswego) and has remained here its entire life. Jim Detzler Pontiac was the dealer who sold the car new in 1976. The car still retains the original dealer sticker on the tailgate. The original owners (a mature couple) owned and maintained this car up until the 1990 when the original selling dealer, Jim Detzler Pontiac, bought the car back from the widow of the original owner. It sat in his warehouse for the roughly 25 years. I was told Jim would hold onto cars that came in on trade that caught his attention and put them in his private stash. The car was brought back to life early last year and I have been working on it as time permits ever since.

This is a mostly original paint car, adult owned and no signs of a wreck. That being said, the car does have blemishes in the paint but it is 40 years old. There is one piece of trim on the bottom of the fender someone secured to the car with two screws before I owned it (see picture).Car runs and drives well. Took it on a 100 mile cruise over the weekend.

The original owners added a trailer hitch and it remains on the car today. Car was undercoated when new and it definately protected the car.It has a solid frame.

This car is a very unique build! Ordered in Firethorn red with Pontiac 350 2 barrel (400 was standard), No AC, bucket seats, center console, floor shift automatic, rally gauge package with speedo, tach, oilpressure, water temperature, volt meter and fuel gauge -ALLWORKING(usually found on Trans Am and Grand Prix), rally II wheels, G80 rear endand more. It cost nearly $5,000 in 1976. PHS documented (see photo). Out of just 8056 built in 1976 how many came like this from the factory with buckets and console? How many of those are left? It is not perfect but I am leaving it better than I found it. Spent over $1500 on restoring gauges, radio and clock alone. I have never seen another one like it much less ever seen one for sale.

I must stress the car is not perfect. The car is a driver. The paint is not perfect. Frankly, this is a mid-70’s GM car, it was not perfect when it left the factory. There has been some light paint and patch work done prior to my ownership. Firethorn red was known to fade or oxidize. There are some tiny spots of rust but you have to look closely to find them. It is a 10 footer. It does drip transmission fluid from time to time. I have detected no other fluid leaks.Solid frame. It has four brand new tires, less than 400 miles on them. The spare is original and never been down from what I could tell.It has a brand new battery. It could use a muffler down the road (its a little rattily at times but not loud) but I will leave that to the next owner if he/she decides to put dual exhaust on the car.The carpet is original and has wear but shows well. The upholstery and headliner are in great condition. The dash is un-cracked and there are no cracks in the glass. Windows go up and down like they should. No third row seating. The rally II wheels have been restored and have new (reprodution) center caps. The radio and gauges all work. The car isalso has a 8 track player totransport you back to the 70s. :) The clock works too!

Whether you intend to get this wagon out on the road, take it to shows and events, or just enjoy its presence in your collection - any time spent with this car is sure to bring smiles. This is not a car for the shy, as it gets complements everywhere it goes and invokes memories from admirers. This car is a head turner everytime I have taken it out.It truly is a fun ride for the whole family.

If you want something no one else has at the show, this is it!
