One owner classic cars are the like the ultimate prize in the collector car world! When you can find an example of ANY vehicle that has been lovingly and carefully maintained and cared for by the ONE and ONLY ORIGINAL OWNER, you can bet the car will be one of the nicest finds ever.
This particular 1978 Pontiac Firebird Formula is just that kind of car, and was purchased BRAND NEW on 03/03/1978 with 32 miles on it according to the warranty paperwork included with the car.
It was purchased in Minnesota, and driven only a few summers up north before the owners brought it to the Florida home they had.
The cars has ridiculously clean floor pans, chassis components, and frame rails, NONE of which are “gunked up” with undercoating or anything. The condition and originality of the chassis, pans, and floors coincides with the cars Florida history.
The only owners of this car used it seasonally here in Florida, until they retired for good in 1992 and began using it almost daily. In 1993, they became discouraged by the cars weak factory powertrain when they took it on longer trips to Daytona and the Panhandle. They consulted with a friend who owned a speed shop in Charlotte County, and in September of 1993 sent him the car for a complete conversion to a brand new GMPP crate ZZ3 HO engine with 345hp and 387 lbs torque! They even saved the stamping number for the motors pallet crate that comes with for posterity!
Once the engine was installed, the transmission was upgraded from the factory 3 speed automatic to a brand new 700R4 overdrive automatic to let the car stretch its legs a bit more on those long Florida day trips.
Upgrades to the cars cooling system were done to make sure it didn’t ever run hot including a high-flow performance water pump and massive aluminum racing radiator with 180 thermostat.
Other than adding some custom MARCH pulleys and some upgrades to the chrome and bright work under the hood, the rest of it is stock, and about as seamless an install as you could ask for!
The car now has room to open up on the highways and a little over DOUBLE the horsepower ratings of the stock set up!
I have taken this car on a cruise to the other coast of Florida, and had it travelling at 100mph GPS verified without ANY issue, and taking at just under 2,800 rpm!!!! At 70, the engine is hardly working at all, and actually turns in pretty impressive fuel economy of about 17mpg if you can manage to keep your foot out of it!
Jump on the gas, and the ZZ3 motor will send a ton of power to the rear end and set you in motion in a hurry!
Power comes on smooth, clean, and without issue, and the car clicks through each of the 4-speeds seamlessly and smoothly.
The car had approximately 56,500 miles when the transplant was done, and now has 83,290, so the powertrain only has about 26,790 on it since installation, and less than 1,200 miles per year since it was done.
It still looks incredibly clean and fresh thanks to meticulous cleaning and indoor storage.
The engine bay as whole is clean, neat, and ready for a car show or event.

This is an original A/C car, but they elected to not install it back in the car after the engine swap. They retained what appears to be almost all of the original parts, hoses, etc. that are not STILL intact in the car, and all of these items wil come with it should you wish to install the A/C down the road. The fan, heater, defrost, and vent controls all function like they should.
Also included is a box with some of the original take off items like the factory air cleaner cover and other goodies. They will be placed carefully in the trunk of the car when it leaves our store.
Mechanically, everything on the car seems to be in perfect working order. It starts, idles, runs drives, and stops without any issues or problems.
Power brakes are solid and sure, and the car doesn’t pull, wander, or fade under heaving braking.
Power steering is light, easy to control, and has a straight track with no chatter, noise, or pulling while driving.
The car rides fantastic, and takes bumps as nice as it takes curves thanks to recent suspension component OEM replacements. No odd noises or issues with the chassis system either.
Factory door decals are still intact on the driver side door, as are the FISHER BODY sill emblems.
Fender stampings are in place too.
The Glacier Blue finish on the car is in great condition, and still shows glossy and clean from front to back thanks to a lifetime of indoor storage and careful cleaning by one original owner. The car was his baby, and it shows!
There are some minor marks like stone chips, little scuff marks, and a small area of paint crackle in the lower middle of the front chin spoiler, but other than that, the car shows ridiculously well, and never fails to get a thumbs up from passerby.
THERE IS NO RUST, BONDO, REPLACED PANELS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT ON THIS CAR. IT IS A SUPER STRAIGHT, SOLID STEEL, ALL ORIGINAL AND 100% SOLID AND TRUE FACTORY CAR. NO RUST. NONE
Door gaps and panel fit are factory perfect since it never has been apart, and the finish just shows beautifully from every angle as you can see in the 100 photos below. WE HAVE NOT DETAILED THE CAR!!!! I just wipe them off with Turtle Wax Quickshine after we wash them, and shoot the photos so you can see what the car is REALLY like, not some photo shopped version of it.
Chrome and bright work on the car is in excellent condition and shows only the lightest signs of wear.
Light fixtures front and rear look fantastic and everything works like it should.
Windows are clean, clear, and fog free all around, and are chip and crack free.
Regulators still roll the windows up and down smoothly, and the tracks and scrapers are in great condition too.
Emblems and decals on the car are in fantastic condition, and none of them should need replaced or repaired.
Wheels are the stock rims that show a few normal use marks in a couple areas, but overall present wonderfully on the car.
Raised-white-letter Firestone Firehawk tires complete the look of the car with modern radial feel. They are only about 3,000 miles old and look and perform perfectly, and are sized P225/60R15.
Wheel wells are clean, and like the rest of the chassis, free of any guck, undercoating, or other substances.
Crack open the doors and the interior of the car is just as nice as the outside.
Black buckets up front with rear split jump seats are in very good condition, with limited signs of use and wear, and NO damage, rips, or seam pulls evident. The original owner actually doesn’t think ANYONE was ever in the back of the car!!!
Center console is clean, intact, functional, and has no signs of damage or disrepair. Lid opens and closes like it should, and the factory shifter was replaced with a B&M ratchet unit when the new 700R4 was installed. It works perfectly too!
Carpeting is so clean and nice that it’s hard to believe it is original, but it IS!
Must have to do with such limited use over the years, and the factory GM rubber floor mats all around the car to keep it clean!
Kick panels, side panels, pill covers, and the headliner are all in excellent condition and issue free, as are the two sunvisors on the car.
The woodgrain trim on the dash looks remarkable, and has no issues. All of the switchgear is in excellent working and looking condition.
Steering wheel is clean and uncracked, but the wood trim part of it shows light marks in a couple of spots.
Tilt column works like it should, as do the hazard lights and the signal arm.
Wipers work, lights work, high beam switch works, and the rear defroster works!
Factory radio is inoperative at this time, and stopped working about 8 months ago according to the original owner. He never looked into it, nor have I.
The climate system and all of its settings and levers adjust as they should, and the fan switch works correctly on all speeds.
E-Brake functions like it should, as does the release pull.
Factory tachometer was replaced with a SUN Supertach when the engine swap was done. It works like it should.
Factory speedometer and odometer work like they should, and is within 3mph of GPS.
Fuel gauge works like it should, as does the voltmeter, rear defroster switch, and the 12v outlet with cigar lighter.
Ashtray pulls out like it should and is clean.
Glovebox is clean, functional, and lined.
Rear package tray shows sun fade and wear, and the factory speakers look good and probably sound great too once you get the radio working!
Trunk is clean, solid, and all original. Like the rest of the car, it is completely RUST, ROT, and issue free!
Lining is clean and shows only light signs of use.
Trunk light works as it should, and the jack use stickers are still in place but show normal wear.
The temporary spare and jack system are all in place and have not been touched since new.
All of the rubber, seals, weather stripping, and trim seals are in very good condition throughout the car, and function like they should.
