1987 Fiero GT LT1 V8 Conversion
It hurts to have to let this car go after almost 11 years of ownership but with a family and my work, I'm lucky if I can use it for a Sunday driver. I put more money than I care to figure out and hundreds of hours into this car to make it what I thought a Fiero should be.
The basic car is a 1987 GT. I am unsure of the miles on the body as the gauges have been changed out a few times. Had roughly 90K on it when I purchased it and Ive put about 10k on it in the last 10 years. Options include power windows, power locks, Cruise, AC, Cd player, tilt wheel, GT package, 5 speed transmission, etc....
Exterior options include a custom front bumper to look like a Ferrari 512 done in super high quality thick hand laid fiberglass. I would say its the nicest fiberglass bumper I have ever seen, made by one of the members on Pennocks Fiero Forum. The hood has a huge extractor hood scoop built in, done very well and strong, really keeps the car cool. Side window scoops are fiberglass parts. Paint was done in 2007 in the stock bright blue poly with a whole cup of large silver metal flake added. The front clip was painted last 9 months ago. I have roughly 1 pint of matching paint left to go with the car. I would give the paint a 9/10 because its in great condition but there are a few chips and scuffs on the older painted parts. Headlights are a custom made part a guy did for me about 9 years ago, They have HID headlights and work really will. Wheels are 18" Motegi MR7 with almost new Toyo tires. Hood and Trunk have Rodney Dickman gas struts for opening and a cleaner look.
Interior is mostly stock and extremely nice. Seats are original and show very minimal wear. Very clean inside. Has some wood dash accents and a Grant steering wheel. Aftermarket Temp, volt and oil pressure gauges in the stock pod. And a very short throw shifter with custom knob and boot.
Chassis of the car is rust free. All the suspension and steering were rebuilt 10K ago. Front has Polyurethane bushings all around, new shocks, new steering rack, Rodney Dickman 1" lowering ball joints and adjustable upper ball joints, Moog inner and outer tie rods, poly sway bar links, new calipers. Front rotors, pads and bearings replaced 500 miles ago. Rear suspension also had new ball joints, tie rod ends, Timkin premium wheel bearings, brakes calipers, parking brake cables, polyurethane bushings, struts with lowering springs, aluminum cradle bushings, and aftermarket sway bar. Everything is tights and rides quiet.
Now the fun part. The Engine is a LT1 from a 1996 Chevy Corvette with roughly 350HP. Motor has around 25k miles as it was from a extremely low mile car. I also had the machine shop go though it prior to install, has new bearings, timing chain, oil pump and rebuilt heads. All new gaskets, seals, etc.... The adapter kit is from V8 Archie. The intake manifold was modified so it could be turned around and work properly. Optispark distributor, plugs & wires have less than 2K on them and controlled by a MSD 6AL Ignition box. All the cooling system parts are custom built because the stock water pump does not fit. A racing electric water pump is mounter inside the passenger quarter panel area that flows a ton more water than stock. To make the cooling system work custom machined billet steel adapters were made to connect to the block and thermostat housing. Belt drive system is very simple and has all custom made brackets to use a inexpensive GM 105 amp alternator, stock compressor and a auto tensioner. Transmission is a Getrag 5 speed that was rebuilt by Midwest transmission with all new bearings & synchro's . Axles are custom made from a shop in Florida from all high strength parts to handle 800+hp. Clutch and flywheel are made custom by Centerforce Clutches. The whole drivetrain is mounted to the cradle on custom Polyurethane mounts that are super strong, prevent vibration and limit the motor movement to almost nothing. The wiring harness is a modified Painless setup and the PCM is custom tuned by Sinister Performance. Exhaust system consists of Pacesetter ceramic coated headers flowing through a 2.5" manderal bent pipe, magnaflow high flow catalytic converters and a flow tech muffler with stainless C6 corvette tips. Exhaust took a lot of engineering to fit and is actually quieter than a stock fiero V6. Fuel system is a Turbo Trans AM fuel pump flowing through rebuilt 23lb injectors. The whole engine compartment has been head shielded along with the trunk storage area. Has a working cruise control system with upgraded digital servo, new cruise stalk and brake switch. Battery relocated to the spare tire area with a Optima red top.
Now this car isn't perfect but its pretty damn nice. Truly a unique car that gets attention anywhere I go. Needs a couple things like new trunk carpet, AC compressor leaks from the case and the power door lock actuators are weak. I have only about 900 miles on the swap. It may need a larger radiator too as I'm still using a all aluminum stock style single core radiator.
