In the world of custom-built hot rods there are nice cars, and then there are cars that are so outrageous they simply can’t be duplicated. You know the classics I’m talking about. The stuff that fronts multiple magazines and constantly rotates through various forms of Social Media as quasi brand ambassadors. Well, when it comes to likes, it’s hard to imagine anything more ‘tap worthy’ than this incredible, Ray Evernham-built MoPar! Backing 358 cubic inches of NASCAR V8 with a NASCAR 4-speed, a NASCAR Car of Tomorrow chassis and vintage-tinged aesthetics, this coupe has been dropping jaws ever since it rolled in to our showroom. BODYWORK/TRIM

Combining old school American style with modern NASCAR technology, this Plymouth, officially named ForPly, is the custom, street legal racer that made Ray Evernham an authority of the collector car scene. Its body was specifically chosen because 1964 was the year the Plymouth Belvedere won both the Daytona 500 and the NASCAR Grand National championship. That profile looks particularly appealing in Sherwin-Williams Radiant Red matte 2-stage, which is detailed in gratuitous Graphite accents. And naturally, that trick pigment serves as a fine foundation for lots of custom detailing. Up front, a black-trimmed grille hangs traditional headlights above a color-keyed bumper, clean parking lamps and a carbon fiber, NASCAR-style splitter. Behind that grille, small pins lead the eye to a wiperless cowl, which fronts a stainless-trimmed greenhouse. Beneath that glass, the car’s profile takes its NASCAR lineage very seriously by shedding everything but a recessed fuel filler and custom, side-exit exhaust. And at the back of that profile, a stainless-trimmed valance hangs traditional taillights between a custom, NASCAR-style spoiler, a faux overflow port and a second color-keyed bumper.

ENGINE

Toss the bonnet and you’ll find a NASCAR-spec, Evernham Motorsports-built Dodge R5-P7 358 that creates over 750 horsepower! Sourced from a Kasey Kahne-driven stock car, that beast feeds thanks to hassle-free fuel injection, which rides between a lightweight intake and proper cowl induction. That intake fills requisite MoPar heads, which are sandwiched between stylish MoPar valve covers and stainless long-tube headers. At the back of those heads, a hot distributor sequences fire through thick Delphi Packard Electric Motorsports wires. Spark for that fire is provided by a small alternator, which, along with slick CV power steering and a massive water pump, spins on fresh V-belts. A heavy-duty aluminum radiator makes excellent use of a large puller fan. And the body-matched engine bay is nice and clean, featuring an insulated hood, custom inner fenders and peeks at the car’s trick NASCAR chassis.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

Park this Plymouth on a lift and you’ll find hundreds of hours of fabrication and customization that add up to impressive appearance points and big performance gains. The buff 358 leads a race-prepped 4-speed, which twists power to a 9-inch Ford axle that’s finished with 3.60 gears. That stellar drivetrain rides a fully adjustable NASCAR Car of Tomorrow chassis, which is bookended by front and rear clips that were raced under Scott Riggs in the 2007 Daytona 500. Stops are provided by a NASCAR-spec brake system, which cinches four 4-piston calipers around two 13-inch rotors and two 11-inch rotors. Spent gases are managed by massive, NASCAR-style pipes, which breathe through an X-shaped crossover and fully integrated mufflers. And power pounds the pavement through custom, NASCAR-style wheels, which spin 285/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs.

INTERIOR

Between the doors, it becomes blatantly evident that this coupe is much more than some flashy parking lot poser. NRG Innovations racing buckets, dressed in 5-point Simpson Platinum Plus harnesses, provide plenty of track day comfort. At the base of those seats, red accent lighting highlights a carbon fiber transmission tunnel, which balances an MVE shifter opposite Firebox fire suppression hardware. A custom dash frames digital, multi-channel Racepak telemetry next to modern Pioneer audio in a custom, carbon fiber instrument panel. The driver carves the track through a suede-wrapped Momo steering wheel. And everything is braced by a full, NASCAR-spec cage.
