1953 Packard 250 Convertible - Low Production Driver!OVERVIEW:This 1953 Packard Convertible is one of 1,518 built. Built in the USA, it spent most of its life in the state of Texas and remains very solid, rust free, complete and unmolested with no modifications. Packards of course were well-known for their hallmark quality and superior engineering, causing them to be referred to as the American Rolls Royce, which gave rise to their equally well-known slogan;â€˜Ask the Man Who Owns One!â€™
ID tag on the left door hinge pillar gives the serial number as 2679 2806. The car has a correct L-head straight eight 327 ci. Thunderbolt engine, with optional Ultramatic transmission, and is equipped with power steering and brakes.Odometer mileage reads 49,801 but actual mileage is unknown. Service stickers on the driverâ€™s door from 1983 and 1989 both show 49,799 miles, so the odometer was not recording until just recently when a new cable was installed.
Imported into Canada in 2006 and garage kept since, it had not been driven until very recently. The Packard enthusiast who imported the car passed away recently and the car was acquired by a friend Packard club member to assist the estate. Some servicing was done to the car to render it roadworthy but it was never his intent to keep the car and as such it is now being offered to its next caretaker.

DRIVETRAIN:The 327 ci. L-head straight eight Thunderbolt engine was factory rated at 180 hp. and fueled by Carterâ€™s first 4 bbl. carburetor, although sometime in its life a 1954 engine was installed as evidenced by the block stamping beginning with M3, and the â€™54 casting date on the head.The engine starts well and runs smooth with no unusual noises, but it does smoke a bit of blue. This could be partially due to the fact that the car has not been driven in some time other than recent short local outings to verify its roadworthiness.
All other mechanical components on and around the engine are correct and functional. Belts and hoses are in good condition.Recent mechanical servicing includes a new coil and water pump rebuild. It has a new combination fuel/vacuum pump, but the vacuum side has not been connected.The oil has just been changed and there are no overheating issues.
The Ultramatic 2 speed automatic transmission has been serviced and shifts as it should. There is a leak where the shift linkage enters the housing but the owner has a new seal and will endeavor to install it prior to the car leaving.Packard also equipped these cars with a transmission cooler mounted to the right of the water pump.The rear differential has had a new pinion seal installed, and it runs quiet.Otherwise there are no signs of serious leaks beyond the usual sweat drops.
CHASSIS:These Convertibles ride on a 122â€ wheelbase, and with length just over 213 inches, had a shipping weight of 4,125 lbs.The frame is very solid with no rust issues or signs of collision damage.All chassis and suspension parts appear as original equipment and in serviceable condition.
Both power steering and Easamatic power brake systems have had recent work done and are fully functional. New brakes installed along with new power steering hoses.Complete new exhaust system, new shocks, and new fuel sending unit installed in the tank which has been flushed and cleaned.
The running tires are a matched set of 4 Coker Classic 8.00x15 bias ply white walls.They are mounted on original steel wheels sporting correct Packard full wheel discs in good condition.
BODY & PAINT:The Convertible body appears to be quite solid and straight overall, with no evidence of rust repairs or collision damage.The body mounts, rockers, floor and trunk pans are all very solid, as are the bottoms of the doors and the spare tire well.Fit and alignment of all body panels is good.
This car appears to have only had one repaint in its life, in its original Packard Ivory color and single stage paint, which gives it a correct patina for its vintage as opposed to the modern base/clear finishes.Considering its age, the paint finish is smooth and relatively shiny, and befits the car. It is free of any major issues but does display some minor chips such as along the edge of the driverâ€™s door. There are also a couple of screw holes next to the driver side mirror from a previous mirror.Given the years that have passed since body and paint work was done, I believe there are no hidden surprises with this car.
A new door striker was installed on the driver side, and there are a number of spare interior handles included along with numerous other spare parts.Early production cars had 3 stainless steel scallops mounted on each quarter panel, but these were dropped from later production cars for a cleaner look. This car did not come with the scallops but the previous owner had located 4 NOS ones and they will be included with the spares.
ELECTRICAL & HYDRAULICS:The car retains original 6-volt positive ground electricals and has a new battery. Original wiring harness remains in good serviceable condition.All gauges in original condition, the clock is not working, horn works intermittently.Vacuum wiper motor is present but working condition is unknown since the new vacuum pump has yet to be connected.There is no cigarette lighter, and interior dome light not working, not investigated.
The original signal seeking â€˜wonderbarâ€™ AM radio works, and a same spare is included.Equipped with an internally controlled power antenna, not presently working or investigated.
All exterior lights in working order, all lenses in good condition.Equipped with dual back-up lights and signal lights.
The electric/hydraulic powered top system is complete but currently not operational. We believe it will require a new control valve and some line connections. This service and parts are available from Hydro-E-Lectric in Florida.The hydraulic pump and reservoir are mounted on the driver side firewall in the engine bay, with the control valve mounted under the dash above the steering column. The hydraulic lift rams are in place and connected.
INTERIOR:The interior vinyl upholstery has been tastefully redone and complements the car nicely. The seats are very comfortable.Matching vinyl trims the door and side panels, wind lacing and sun visors.The interior and trunk are fully carpeted, and it has original aluminum sill plates.
Steering wheel shows no cracks, very nice chrome horn ring, and nice center button with only very light crazingOptional day/night mirror.Painted dash has a few paint chips under the instrument cluster.New aftermarket compass mounted above dash, original box included.
All inside chrome and brightwork is in good to very good condition, including the pot metal garnish moldings at the top of the door and rear panels which have only very minor pitting if any.The windshield appears to be the original, and has only one bullâ€™s eye which has been epoxy repaired, and some very light wiper sweep marks.All side glass is original Solex Duolite in good condition, with minor delamination along the bottom edge of the vent glass.All windows roll up and down easily.
All weather seals are original in only fair condition, but included are numerous brand new Steele Rubber weatherstrips and seals still in their packages. It appears to be a complete set with all seals for the convertible top, doors, trunk, windows, etcâ€¦ A complete listing is provided in the photo album.The trunk is fully carpeted, there is no jack, has a non-matching radial spare.
CONVERTIBLE TOP:The Hartz canvas convertible top is in good condition and the fit is very good. With the top up it looks right, not too loose, not too tight.There is a bit of light soiling in a couple of spots, and there are a couple of very tiny pinch spots in the canvas that I even hesitate to call holes, shown in the pics.
The top bow assembly is complete and free of any damage.All new side rail and header seals from Steele Rubber.There is also a top boot for when it is down.
BRIGHTWORK:All chrome and stainless on the car is in good original condition.Front and rear bumpers both carry the optional over-riders, and all are very nice with very good shine, no peeling chrome or rust whatsoever.The upper grille surround has some light pitting, but most other pot metal items are good to very good with minor pitting if any.Super nice hood bird with no pits.
Most stainless side trim is straight and dent free. One notable ding is found on the left fender molding.Packard crest hood emblem retains good color, and there is a new emblem for the side quarter, and one for the trunk lid that is not perfect but much better than the one on the car.The dual door side mirrors are aftermarket.Optional fuel door guard.
SUMMARY:Numerous new and used spare parts are included including an original Service Manual, along with other miscellaneous reference info in a binder. If you are considering a quality built 1950â€™s convertible with limited production rarity, this could be it!Packards have long been known for their quality engineered and long lasting mechanical aspects.Packard owners are supported by two international clubs and a very large and active group of Packard enthusiasts and parts sources. If youâ€™re not familiar with the engineering of Packards and their appeal in the past and present, there is a wealth of information available online or through the clubs.
This Convertible is an ideal candidate for some tinkering to address the operation of the top and a few other minor issues, which would render it a great top down driver, or it is also an excellent prospect for restoration given its completeness and solid condition.
The unfortunate passing of its previous owner has led to it being made available to its next caretaker. It is being offered with a reasonable reserve.
The following video is a brief start-up with a warm engine after a short drive. In it I erroneously call it a Mayfair, the Mayfair name was only used for the hardtops, Packard named these models as simply Convertibles with a capital â€˜Câ€™.
