Description:

1930 Packard 740

Packard was founded in 1899 by James and William Packard and their partner George Weiss. Like many start up entrepreneurs of that time the founders were working to motorize the horse carriage and did so in 1900 a simple single cylinder engine. The vehicle was a success and Packard was on their way to being an iconic American car brands. Early Packards were built in Ohio but the company later moved to Detroit where they remained for many years. In the early 1950’s Packard was purchased by Studebaker Corporation and the manufacturing was moved to Studebaker’s facility in South Bend Ohio. Studebaker built its last Packard in 1958; the last Studebaker was built in 1966. Two pioneering brands that could not compete with the larger Big 3 automakers were now history.

Packard vehicles were considered one of the Three P’s of luxury car royalty; Packard Peerless and Pierce-Arrow. The materials and quality build of pre-war Packard cars allowed them to take their place in this royalty.
