1935 Other Makes American Austin Modified Street RodMICRO CARS! MICRO CARS!! MICRO CARS!!!
MissChiTown is a marketing service for collectors who want to use eBay to market their cars and we have certainly seen our share of Micro Cars. The one thing that can be said about every Micro Car is that it is under powered and very slow…and that is just the way they were built.
Fifteen years ago, circa 2000, a gentleman decided that he wanted to modernize his 1935 American Austin 5 window coupe (Series 475). He went to the trouble of installing into his 1935 American Austin 5 window coupe (Series 475) a 1974 Ford Pinto 2000 cc, overhead valve engine with a Ford C4 automatic 3-speed with a Ford 8-inch axle narrowed with drum brakes. Front brakes are a Ford Mustang (1974 to 1976) disc type. A 1984 GM tilt steering wheel was installed along with power windows! The wheels are genuine wire wheel after-market knock off type. The dashboard has been set up for air conditioning although the rest of the components were never installed.
The rear apron has a beautiful all steel “dummy” continental type spare tire cover. It does not have a real spare wheel or tire.
It is important to note that in some states, like California, some cars were VIN numbered by the VIN number on the engine which was L-13551. This engine was replaced and not kept when the Ford Pinto engine was installed. The current owner has the correct title for this car, however the corresponding vin number on the original engine is not there because the original engine is not there. In view of that the current owner will supply the current title along with a Bill of Sale and a statement of fact of why the number on the title does not correspond to a number on the current Pinto engine.
The elderly gentleman (just a youngster at heart) who owns the car not only has the title that has been put into his name but he also has a copy of the title of the previous owner who did this conversion work and turned over the title to the current owner.
The current owner has mentioned that the conversion is completed as far as the mechanics, however he has always thought about putting in an emergency brake which the car does not have. The current private seller has also stated that it is his opinion that because the car has Ford rear drum brakes it should be a very easy installation to put on an emergency brake.
The engine conversion work was done in the year 2000 and since that time 1715miles have been put on the car. That means that this car is a well sorted car, however the private seller believes that some front-end alignment needs to be done to remove some ‘squirreliness’ that the car gets at higher speeds. The current owner is a very forthcoming gentleman and has indicated that 45 mph around town is just fine, but notto get out on the expressway and do expressway speeds. The car is currently comfortable for driving around town at speeds of 40-45 miles an hour and with the geometry corrected it should become acceptable for higher speeds once it has been tested.
For those who have one or many Micro Cars, they know that in today’s traffic when the light turns green that you feel that everybody wants to run over you because the micro car takes off so slowly. In this particular car, that is certainly not the case but does have the feeling of a little bit of a micro hotrod. The workmanship on this car has been done in a highly acceptable way, the modern dash board gauges all work except for the gas gauge and the tilt steering wheel can make most people comfortable in the seating position.
If you don’t have a micro car or you have only one or an entire collection this certainly would be an attraction to any collector of micro cars because of its unique personality with the 2000 cc Ford Pinto engine.
The 1935 American Austin Bantam coupe has always been a very handsome car and now it has the pickup speed to go out into modern traffic around town and the comfort of power windows, tilt wheel makes it very user friendly.
