1972 Oldsmobile 442 "Viking Blue" 4-Speed

1972 Oldsmobile "Genuine Factory Ordered from the Dealer 442 4-Speed" being sold with "No Reserve"
This could very well be the winter project you have been waiting for!! This Oldsmobile up for auction is the perfect candidate for someone's DREAM 442. I know all the real Olds guys out there know howhard it is to find a True "Code 26" Viking Blue 4-Speed 442. This 1972 original Viking Blue 442 was purchased out of Michigan from the original owner with all of the original documentation. This Viking Blue 442 was purchased brand new at Key Oldsmobile located at 2446 12 Mile Road in Warren, Michigan. My Dad's name was Warren who passed in 1978, so I named my son Warren in 1982. I felt this car was destined for me being purchased new in Warren, Michigan, since Warren is my favorite name. It will be very hard to see this one leave. This 442 was actually purchased by a gentleman for his wife Mildred. Millie must have really had herself some fun 45 years ago. This TrueViking Blue 442 is actually out of my personal collection. I made the purchase around a decade ago with the intention of giving it a complete restoration and keep it as my final 442, since it is so rare. Quite possibly a ONE of ONE Viking Blue with Blue Interior!! I have never seen anther one like it in my 40 plus years of loving 442's.
If you simply double click on the main picture of the auction page then all 24 pictures will be able to be viewed in the larger size by clicking the arrows on each side of the larger pictures.
When I made the purchase I had access to indoor dry storage at an old abandoned Malted Milk Ball factory in Racine, Wisconsin that went out of business in the late 60's or early 70's. I took advantage of that opportunity and there it sat for the past decade. I recently lost that storage and have no room to store this rare car, nor the time to give this rare Viking Blue gem the restoration it deserves to bring it back to its former glory.
This Viking Blue True 442 just saw the light of day for the first time last weekend, so my buddy came over and put new points in and this Rocket fired right up. I drove it over to my picture spot a half a mile away and ran it through all 4 gears and it still shifted as it should. The brake light is on, but the car does stop okay. That will need to be checked out by the new owner. This is a running and driving project that will make someone very happy with some elbow grease and a winter long restoration. There is a new battery with newer terminal mounts, so the car starts right up and really runs pretty good for sitting for 30 years. It will most likely run really good with some new spark plugs and wires.
I'll give a little back round on the 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass S, and the 442 models. According to the OldsFaqs website that anyone can look up on line. This Oldsmobile has an M in the vin number meaning it was produced in Lansing, Michigan. Also the LAN on the data plate proves this car is Lansing built as well as shown on the documentation. Prior to the 1972 model year the vehicle identification numbers in all 442's started out with 344. That was the way to determine whether that specific car was ordered from the dealershipas a true442. The 442 was ordered as a separate model for the last time in 1971. Oldsmobile decided to make the 442 an ordered option starting in 1972. All 1972 442 models came out of the factory titled as an Oldsmobile two-door. This is why all 1972 442 hardtops have just plain Cutlass on the glove box door.
The only way to prove a Cutlass was ordered as a true 442 was if the original owner kept the window sticker or if the car has a build sheet stating it was ordered with the 442 package. I never looked for the build sheet, because I have the original window sticker, 1972 Oldsmobile Emission Control Systems manual, 1972 Oldsmobile New Vehicle Warranty manual, 1972 Oldsmobile Consumer Information Manual, 1972 Oldsmobile Owner's Manual, and even the Protect-O-Plate in the original plastic dealer's sleeve. This is a very highly documented realViking Blue factory ordered 442 with the documentation to make it that much more valuable.
Sure this Viking Blue Beauty needs a full restoration, but what a muscle car to restore. I believe the paint to be original, so what you see is exactly what needs to be done. The paint is very faded and no attempt was made to wet sand and buff it. It basically has all of its original patina. Original cars are very hard to come across in todays day and age. The original blue manufacturers decal is still present inside the drivers door jamb.
This car has the original open, clean, and clear Michigan title along with all the documents I have that will be included in this sale. The mileage reads 03,550, so it has barely rolled over once. The mileage is exempt in most states for cars over 10 years old nowadays, but it is very rare to find a car for sale with a cool rare old title like the one that comes with this rare muscle car. The last time this car was registered was in 1988 as evident by the Michigan license plate that came on the rear of this Viking Blue 442. It has been completely off the road for the last 30 years. As far as I know every last piece and part are all original to this car including the Oldsmobile Rocket 350 engine and 4-speed transmission, which I believe are all original and numbers matching. It even has the original A-Arm covers attached to the inner front wheel wells, plus the original valve cover breather still attached to the air cleaner and the original heat riser tube also still in place attached to the original air cleaner. That's how original this car is!
This is an original bucket seat car that was factory ordered without a console. I know from watching enough of the live muscle car auctions that the announcers always appreciate when a car is restored exactly like it appeared out of the factory. I've heard them many times comment on how they like to see the originality of how the 4-speed shifter stands alone without a console. The proper original 4-speed floor shifter boot is still in good condition on the floor. I just happened to have a blue 4-speed console that I showed in some pictures, but that will only be available to the winning bidder at an additional $500 charge. The interior looks in relatively decent condition as shown in the pictures. The headliner has a split towards the back and the package tray will need to be replaced under the back window. The front buckets could use reupholstering, but I placed some brand new seat covers on the buckets just for this auction. I also added a set of 4 brand new deluxe carpeted floor mats in dark gray. I couldn't find any in blue. The original set of 5 seat belts are all still present. The hood is a genuine GM steel framed hood with the faux vents. If I were going to restore the car I would definitely add the most excellent W-25 ram-air hood prior to the restoration. Quite possibly a whale tail spoiler along with the W-30 striping. The original 442 striping that came on this car looks cool, but these cars just look fantastic with the W-30 striping, and I believe that increases the value tremendously. Especially on an original 4-Speed car!
Theseearly 70's muscle cars have incredible investment potential, and have been referred to as rolling bank accounts. This auction is just in time to buy that muscle car that you have been wanting to restore during the upcoming winter months as a Father and Son project. My belief is with some hard work it is possible to have a super nice Viking Blue 442 4-speed by next summer. When these cars are done properly they command big dollars when they have this kind of documentation if the new owner ever decides to sell. Most any of these parts are available at a wide variety of new aftermarket muscle car parts suppliers in identicalreplacement parts.
The options include power steering, power front disc brakes, dual sport mirrors, Super Stock III wheels, bucket seats, and the wide variety of options listed above and shown on the original window sticker. The factory door buzzer even works along with the reverse lock-out. This way the key can not be removed from the ignition unless the car is placed into reverse whenever it is parked. The original dash pad looks in good shape, andhas the original AM Radio. This dash was not all cut up like was typicallydone tothese cars back in the day. Mounted under the dash is one of those old school FM converters for all you guys out there that still remember what one of those are.
The original floors and frame really look in decent condition from everywhere I checked. The trunk floor has the original floor mat and carries what I believe to be the original full size Super Stock III spare wheel with the original Wide Oval spare tire, jack, and crow bar. I believe the two rear Firestone Wide Oval tires are original to the car, but the front Firestone Super Sport tires were replaced by Millie sometime back in the 80's. Those were the tires to have back in the day. I believe the tires mounted on this Viking Blue 442 are mounted on the original 14" inch Super Stock III wheelspainted to match the original Viking Blue body color of the car. All four wheels have the bolt-on center caps, andall fourbeauty trim rings.
There are the original factory front and rear sway bars with the boxed control arms as were ordered on all true 442's. The rear-end is a 10-bolt, but I am not sure of the gear ratio. I'm assuming it is whatever factory posi-traction rear-end came on this car when it was ordered new. Probably a 3.23 posi. I'm way past my high speed days, but I couldn't help myself when I went over to take the body pictures and I did light up the rear tires. The car started taking off sideways as I was lighting the car up, so I let off the gas before hitting 2nd gear, but suffice it to say I would believe this car would smokem into 2nd gear as well. There is a full set of original stainless steel wheel opening moldings. A lot of the chrome is still very usable on this car, or in drivers quality condition. Basically, what you see is exactly what you get! These mostly complete older classics that have survived for over 40 years are becoming harder and harder to find. Especially in true code 26 Viking Blue!!!
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has the 1972 OldsmobileCutlass/442 listed at $55,200 in high condition, which theyconsider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition valued at $35,640, which theyconsider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a20-Footer!
As shown in the pictures I would consider this Viking Blue 442 currently valued in between the average and low condition, and could be rated much higher with some hard work.
Nada has the lowest condition value at $25,080 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration.
This Original Viking Blue 442 is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these cars have shown to consistently escalate in value. When these cars are done, these GM A-Body muscle cars are the finest handling cars I have ever driven. This car is for the guy or girl that always wanted one back in high school, or had one and wants to restore one instead of paying the crazy prices to purchase one already finished. This would be a great father and son project or for a high end classic car restoration shop that knows the values of these rare classic muscle cars. There is no finer muscle car on the planet in my eyes than the 1970-1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass/442. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nomimal price.
This Viking Blue 442 will be safely stored until pick-up or transport is arranged. The deposit will need to be paid within 24 hours, and the balance is due within 72 hours prior to the pick-up or transport of this car. The title will be sent out the same day the funds are clear, or kept in the glove compartment with all the other documentation for transport. Whichever way the winning bidder decides. The funds that are received will be going to finish up another project that I ran out of funds to complete. That is why I am allowing this car to sell for whatever it brings.
I know my descriptions can be a little long winded, but I try to list and accurately portray everything I can think of when I write a description.
