This was a completely frame-off restoration, with every single nut and bolt brand new or restored. More than $50,000 spent on the Restoration!! ..... Sit back, relax and enjoy the story!! .... 1972 would come to be known as a pivotal year in the automotive world. Due to a UAW Strike and the upcoming Colonnade series, the '72 models appeared very much like the 1971s. There was, however, a big change in identifying certain trim levels. The VIN no longer specified a car as a GTO, GSX, SS396 or 442. These were now an "option" or "upgrade" to each division's A-Body. Insurance premium surcharges, EPA regulations, and rising gas prices made many think that high performance wars in Detroit were coming to an end. Not so across town in Lansing, Michigan, home of Oldsmobile and the famous "W-Machines." ... Yes, the fire was still burning there and Oldsmobile engineers saw to it that muscle car buyers still had a full pallet of choices pertaining to performance, handling and high-visibility options.
Available now in the Cutlass line up, in addition to the torque monster 455, was the venerable Rocket 350, a close cousin to the famed "W-31" of just a few years earlier. When coupled to a 4-speed transmission, this 350 received a healthier camshaft and a re-calibrated 4-barrel Q-Jet. Checking those two boxes on the order sheet mandated a 3:23 rear end gear ratio, making for a Hot Street Machine that flew under the radar and surprised quite a few red-light challengers!!
... The car you see here was ordered with that exact combination. During its frame off restoration, the car also received a comprehensive drive train rebuild with several engine performance enhancements. Also included are a new flywheel, clutch kit, complete 4-speed and differential rebuild with "W-27" carrier cover.
The entire suspension and brake system were refurbished with attention paid to handling, stopping, drivability and durability. Inside, the interior is all new with top-of-the-line Legendary Products used throughout. The original Hurst shifter has been overhauled and the correct shifter ball is in place. A beautiful Rosewood steering wheel is the final touch rounding out the cabin. Outside, the exterior has been finished with BCCC in the original color of Sequoia Green with Saturn Gold stripes on the muscular fiberglass Ram-Air Hood and lower edge of the deck lid. Complementing the Green/Gold combination, the rolling stock consists of a set of 5 (including spare) beautiful, brand new Hurst Goldtone wheels wrapped in Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 Performance tires. The exhaust rumbles through a set of Hooker Competition Coated Headers and a 2/12 Aluminized system with H-pipe and chrome trumpet tips. ...
