1989 Mitsubishi Montero

Here is a New Mexico, 1989 Montero 4x4 that runs great! Reliable vehicle. Previously owned by a guy who lived in Espanola and commuted to work in Los Alamos, so most of the miles are highway. We have only used it to gather firewood, but are moving out of state, so sadly, this has to go since we will only be taking one vehicle with us.

On the Autocheck report it shows up as there being a "major issue" under "Title." This must be due to the fact that the odometer doesn't seem to be working properly, at least not as far as I know, although we haven't given it much attention to be honest. So we're not really sure just how many actual miles are on it.

4 wheel drive works great. Motor and drive train are fine and work great. Tires still in good condition - see photos. No rust on undercarriage / bottom - see photos.

What’s wrong: rusted out spots on rear wheel wells - just cosmetic. Small dent on right front / hood which has rust on it - see photos. Hood works great though. Windshield washers don’t work, so best to carry a spray bottle in the car, or at least a water bottle until it can be fixed. A/C doesn’t work that we know of. Rear gate opens, but sticks and is difficult to open unless you have very strong fingers, which is annoying. Driver side rear passenger door has no door handle, so only opens from outside. One or two gaskets (like the valve cover gaskets) are leaking some oil (a bit of smoke always comes out of the engine once you stop, after you've been driving it for a while, but that goes away quickly enough and we've never had problems with overheating or anything), so could be replaced (it’s easier and less expensive to leave them, so I just add oil when it needs it); the engine itself does not leak oil - just the top-mounted gaskets (main seals and head gasket are fine). Emergency brake very weak - needs adjustment. Brake warning light is always on (but again, we've never had issues other than with the parking brake, which we would definitely get fixed if we were intending to keep the vehicle).

What does work: wipers, radio and speakers (turns on and can hear static on the speakers, but we don’t get any reception or radio stations up here in the mountains, so not entirely sure if the radio really works); heat works REALLY well; headlights and turn signals; instrument panel lights and gauges all work; rear seat folds up against the front seat for more storage.

We usually only drive this to get firewood from the National Forest, but I recently drove it 2 hours to Santa Fe to drop off a very large, extremely heavy antique wood cookstove at a thrift store — it drives great and runs great, and I never gave a second thought to driving it at least 4 hours. It’s reliable and strong. It did great in the heavy snow and ice this past winter (with 4x4 engaged), and when we drive it off-road to get wood, it does really well on rough terrain and mud. Probably could do with an alignment by now.

5/18 - Update: We checked the odometer, and it does seem to be working as far as we could see. So I'm assuming these may be the original miles after all.

We are 2 hours from Albuquerque and 2 hours from Santa Fe. We can drive it to you (if you live in those parts of NM) if you are serious about buying it NOW. If you just want to look it over and give it a test drive, otherwise you will have to come up here to us.

Email with any questions.

Deposit of $200 required within 24 hours of end of auction, or you can come and pick up the vehicle within that time, and pay in full then.

Vehicle must be picked up within one week after end of auction. If this is a problem, please contact us before you bid since we will be moving out of state in early June. Vehicle cannot be left here after we have gone.

Please check the Description section once in a while in case we have forgotten to add something, and we will add it later.

Vehicle is sold as is. It is an old, basic SUV, no frill, no real luxuries but as far as we know it is mechanically sound, though we are not mechanics. If our circumstances were different, we would not be selling it because it has proven to be so reliable and strong.

Serious buyers only please!
