1979 MG MGB

MGB Roadster Sale

1979 MGB Roadster 40 years old

Taken as Part trade for two motorcycles in February this year

Great value Antique MG at this time. Surely destined for sky high prices in the future

This 1979 MGB offers the opportunity to put an iconic British Classic in your garage at a very reasonable price.

This is one of the last MG Roadsters before production ceased in UK.

Built by British Leyland. Many factory modifications on this 1979 model which are not included on earlier models (see description)

This MGB Roadster was family owned and garage kept for all of its life. Owned by the father but driven by the good lady of the house for many years.

I had big plans to improve this car here in Florida.

Registered as Antique auto in my name with Clean Florida Title in hand. My car since Feb 2019

Have no time to move forward quickly improving and inside parking is becoming a problem

Needs a new home and a capable owner, to improve and cherish and use at same same time too

No warranty expressed or intended, the car is 40 years old and some parts could be improved or possibly replaced. Come and inspect, serious buyers only, no returns

DESCRIPTION

  • MGB Roadster has a Rigid Monocoque structure with plenty of steel to keep it together. As opposed to the earlier MGA which utilised a body on frame setup

  • Uprated 1800 cc engine.

  • Roll up windows

  • 4 speed Manual all synchromesh gear box

  • Front and rear anti-roll bars

  • Twin electric air cooling fans

  • Front Disc brakes

  • Smog system

  • Seat belts

  • 95 Horsepower 110 ft/Ibs of torque

  • Engine designed for lead free fuels

Good Looking /Fun to drive /Easy to maintain / Great Spares availability

    Many custom upgrades available too.

  • Upon close inspection I have found the body and support structure to be in fine condition, I have not found any rot or rust of any significance anywhere, all is sound and appears repair free. (see photos) Body and support structure is the most important requirement for purchasing one of these cars.

All other work is well within the capabilities for the majority of home mechanics.

Hydraulic lines and petrol tank seem fine too.

An electric fuel pump is fitted.

The engine is easy to start, runs and pulls strong, all gears operate well with no crunching or jumping out of gear experienced, no smoke seen from exhaust either. With temps in the high eighties she ran well with no overheating and with only one standard electric cooling fan operating

A new clutch was fitted according to the previous owner...

The engine and overall car has 100,000 miles recorded and is 40 yrs old and no doubt could be improved upon or parts replaced.

Next oil change due in 2000 miles according to sticker info but would advise changing all fluids.

All gauges and lights work including wipers, horn, indicators dip switch, clock and lights, even trunk light. The exception is the hazard light, here the rocker switch is seized up

The car has been treated to a respray in Red by the previous owner and was previously White I believe. Some scratches here and there, but have rest of paint from previous owner

There is a negative terminal battery isolating switch which functions well when car is not in use(insurance recommendation)

    On the down side

The front right hand disc brake needs attention as not operating properly, inspected the caliper and all seems well and indeed the main brake hydraulic cylinder looks quite new. I had it on my list to fit new pads and bleed the system. Disc looks fine too. Left Hand front brake works perfectly, also good disc, caliper and Pads noted.

I removed 90% of 40 yr old black carpets to inspect all floors from the inside and again found no rot or rust, what you see on the photos is original carpet glue and parts of underlay. The carpets need replacement.

The seats and headrests need new covers.

The soft top needs replacing, the frame however is good

I have only seen one electric cooling fan operate and have bought a new original one to mount, again fault might be with the wiring or thermostat or maybe it kicks in at a higher temperature

Wiring in general could be improved, I have purchased a new indicator switch and headlight switch, all readily available online

The car engine was fitted with a smog control system (USA requirement) this consists of an air pump and filter and injector type piping and hoses etc . This has been disconnected on most of these cars. However I did manage to buy a complete as new original smog system (see photo) so this can be fitted as and will maintain the originality as supplied from British Leyland for the USA market
